Moonshine Racers
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1991 SyksyAmerikan kieltolaki astui voimaan 16. tammikuuta vuonna 1920.
Pohjimmiltaan peli on kuitenkin autolla ajelua pisteestä A pisteeseen B mahdollisimman nopeasti.
1991 SyksyProhibition in America came into force on 16 January 1920. All manufacture, distribution and consumption of alcoholic drinks was strictly forbidden. TV series and films about the era have been made by the bucketload, so why not games too?
Published by Millennium and programmed by Peakstar, Moonshine Racers tells the story of two wild young men, Ike and Billy Joe, who make their living brewing backwoods rotgut out in the sticks during Prohibition and then haul it off to be sold at roadside diners. Sheriff Sam, however, is dogging the boys' heels like a wolf as they tear away from the copper in their clapped-out pickup.
At heart, though, the game is about driving a car from point A to point B as fast as possible. The faster you reach the finish, the more money you get. With the money you can then buy all sorts of stuff that helps you get from point A to point B faster, and so on. All kinds of dangers lurk on the road, however, from other cars to logs and roadblocks.
So on the ideas front Moonshine Racers offers nothing new or astonishing. That leaves the execution to pick apart. Graphically the game serves up better-than-average menus, pictures and animation, but the driving section itself fails to convince. Although the scenery is perfectly OK and the road rolls under the car fast enough, the other cars and obstacles are wildly blocky. On top of that there's too much else going on on screen (character comments, messages from the police radio, etc.), which pulls your concentration away from the actual driving. If calling something average doesn't count as slagging it off, then the sound can be neither slagged off nor praised.
There's not much to complain about in the playability; the car obeys the joystick perfectly well. The only small minus is the game's two disks, the first of which is gobbled up entirely by the excellent opening animation. For some reason the game asks for disk one every now and then, and still doesn't seem to load much of anything from it. This would be no bother at all if the game recognised two drives. As it is, all the playing about with disks remains an annoyance.
Those looking for a fast-paced driving game will probably find their satisfaction somewhere other than in Moonshine Racers.
