Mind Bender
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1990 KevätValonsäteen ohjailu peilien avulla kuuluu sarjaan yksinkertaiset mutta pelattavat ideat. Ensimmäisen kerran törmäsin siihen Dan Daressa, jossa se oli ympätty yhdeksi ongelmaksi monien joukossa, mutta Gremlinin Deflektor hyödynsi ideaa puhtaammassa muodossa. Mind Benderiä voisi hyvinkin nimittää Deflektor kakkoseksi, jossa laser on korvattu velhon loihtimalla sädekimpulla.
Pelin ideana on saada säde osumaan maaliin pyörittämällä kääpiöiden pitelemiä peilejä. Tehtävän mutkikkuutta on lisätty kieroilla esteillä, kuten lukituilla ovilla, taittavilla prismoilla ja leväkasvustoilla, ja lisäksi joissakin kentissä on sytytettävä lamppuja säteen avulla. Pelaajan on varottava polttamasta velhoa säteellä, mikä on ongelmana varsinkin sellaisissa kentissä, joissa on paljon heijastavia seiniä.
Pelissä valmiina olevien kenttien laatu vaihtelee tavattomasti.
äänipuoli on jätetty sitäkin alkeellisemmalle aseteelle. Nimittäin musiikki koostuu lyhyistä levyltä samplatuista pätkistä.
Ainakin minun mielenkiintoni tappoi jo parin tunnin kuluttua pelin mekaaninen ja deterministinen luonne, mutta omien kenttien suunnittelu on omiaan lisäämään pelin ikää.
1990 KevätSteering a beam of light with mirrors belongs in the category of simple but playable ideas. I first came across it in Dan Dare, where it had been grafted in as one puzzle among many, but Gremlin's Deflektor exploited the idea in a purer form. Mind Bender could well be called Deflektor 2, with the laser replaced by a bundle of rays conjured up by a wizard.
The idea of the game is to get the beam to hit the target by rotating mirrors held by dwarves. The task has been made more convoluted with devious obstacles such as locked doors, refracting prisms and patches of algae, and in some levels you also have to light lamps with the beam. The player has to take care not to burn the wizard with the beam, which is a problem especially in levels with lots of reflective walls.
MB has 50 levels, each more devious than the last, and on top of that you can design another 50 yourself. The program saves your position to disk, so you can always carry on where you left off. The game has one more special feature: every level has its own separate high score table.
The quality of the ready-made levels in the game varies enormously. Sometimes they look impossibly muddled, but by trial and error you get through surprisingly well. Some "one-idea" levels, on the other hand, are dull and exhausting, but once you've solved them, luckily you never have to play them again. The most fun of all are the levels that seem completely impossible until you twig the trick.
The game's graphics are primitive, but clarity is what matters most. The sound has been left at an even more primitive level. Namely, the music consists of short snippets sampled off a record.
My interest, at least, was killed off after just a couple of hours by the game's mechanical and deterministic nature, but designing your own levels is just the thing to extend the game's life.
