Metal Gear
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Maailman pelastaminen on näköjään pienen budjetin touhua.
Tästä on seurauksena monta turhaa kuolemaa.
1990 KevätCoin-op company Taito has mastered the art of going Rambo. Metal Gear's plot is from the most run-of-the-mill end of the scale: a lone commando has to infiltrate the terrorists' headquarters and destroy a secret weapon.
At the start the hero is dropped into the field, where he then rummages bewildered through his backpack, which holds nothing but a radio transmitter and a pair of warm woolly socks. Saving the world is evidently a low-budget affair. So there's nothing for it but to put one combat boot in front of the other and comb the terrain in the hope of better equipment.
The landscape, viewed obliquely from above, leans heavily on shades of green, brown and grey, which gives the game a suitably military look. There's no scrolling; instead you advance one screen at a time in the four compass directions.
Soldiers and war dogs patrol the terrain and the insides of the buildings, and they have been given a field of vision system, meaning they only attack if the player sneaks into their line of sight. At first your only defence is your bare fists, but in buildings and trucks you can find, for example, an Ingram submachine gun, a rocket launcher and plastic explosives. There's other kit to acquire too, such as food rations and binoculars, which let you scout the surroundings within a radius of one screen.
The outdoor area is divided into sections, and you can smuggle yourself from one to another by hopping into the back of a suitable truck. The most interesting stuff to rummage through is inside the buildings, but there you can also run into all kinds of traps, such as infrared alarms.
The game has a handy code system that lets you take along all the equipment you've found, but the assault has to be started from the first screen. The playability has one annoying blunder: if you push the controller even slightly diagonally, the little guy doesn't move anywhere. This leads to many pointless deaths.
For those who like fast-paced action games, MG may be a bit of a disappointment, since at first it seems like a slow-paced and dull slugfest. But once you dive into the game's depths, it turns out to be a rather interesting commando adventure.
