Gumshoe

1990 KevätGumshoe kuuluu peruskaavasta poikkeavien valopistoolipelien harvalukuiseen joukkoon.

1990 KevätGumshoe belongs to the small band of light gun games that depart from the basic formula. In it, for a change, the pistol is used to steer the player character.

Through a landscape that scrolls forward of its own accord toddles a gangster-looking little bloke, whom you can make jump around the screen to your heart's content by shooting him in the backside. Flitting about in this fashion, it's a cosy way to deliver the ransom money to the kidnappers and pick up red balloons on the side, which are supposed to pass for ammunition. The shooting implement also has plenty to do eliminating incoming whisky bottles and other lethal objects.

The four longish levels have been crammed with bouncing about on rooftops, splashing about in the sea and everything in between. There's certainly no shortage of difficulty, since you often have to keep the hero bouncing over thin air while picking off incoming objects at the same time.

Fortunately the game can be matched to a normal human's brain capacity by means of a continuously variable difficulty setting, i.e. by holding the barrel an inch from the screen. The game itself has a rather peculiar concession: if the player botches it at a certain key point, half the level gets left out. The third and most decisive concession is the option to continue the game, thanks to which you get to make the acquaintance of the bogeyman waiting at the end fairly painlessly.

Strangely enough, the game keeps sucking you in even after the final scuffle, so the idiosyncratic control method has an exceptional amount of charm.
