Magic Marble

Magic Marble on erinomainen esitys uudelta yhtiöltä. Jos pelien taso pysyy tällaisena, ei mene kauaa ennenkuin Sphinx ohittaa toisen kovan saksalaisen, Rainbow Artsin.

1990 KevätThe German Sphinx Software is a newcomer on the market, and its first effort, Magic Marble, isn't half bad at all. For a change, the programmers have tried to come up with an original idea for their game, and have even more or less pulled it off.

In the game you steer a marble through complicated mazes, taking care not to fall off the edge and collecting all sorts of junk that gets you extra time, an extra life, a shield and all the other usual stuff.

The Germans have always paid attention to detail, and this game is no exception. The game teems with new programming innovations, at times to the point of tedium. Sure, it's nice that the programmer has come up with a routine for spinning the level numbers around on screen in three dimensions, but enough is enough. The playfield naturally scrolls completely flawlessly and cleanly. The playability has been honed just right, too. The marble obeys the joystick admirably, and there is never any good reason to hurl the stick at the wall and curse the game's unplayability.

For a game of this style, the graphics are pleasantly fine and detailed. The programmers' motto must be "small is beautiful", since the animated objects are very small, but very well animated all the same. The sound effects are the usual hisses, swishes and clunks, but the tune playing in the background is very good. You'd happily listen to it even without playing the game at all.

Magic Marble is an excellent showing from a new company. If the standard of its games stays like this, it won't be long before Sphinx overtakes that other tough German outfit, Rainbow Arts.
