Marble Madness

1987Marble Madness on Atarin kolikkoautomaatteihinsa suunnittelema pallopeli. Amigan piirto-ohjelman DeLuxe Paintin tekijä Electronic Arts on sovittanut pelin Atarin kovaan kilpailijaan, Amigaan. Amigan grafiikka sopii hyvin tällaisen pallon ohjailuun.

1987Marble Madness is a ball game Atari designed for its coin-op machines. Electronic Arts, the maker of the Amiga paint program DeLuxe Paint, has converted the game to Atari's tough rival, the Amiga. The Amiga's graphics are well suited to steering a ball like this.

In the game you steer a blue or a red ball down narrow routes. At first the ball has a few railings to keep it safe, but then the trouble starts. Chasms lurk wherever the green slime-blobs out to catch the ball don't gobble it up, the green gunk puddles don't dissolve it or the vacuum cleaner doesn't suck it in.

The game has seven difficulty levels, and it can be played by one or two players. With one player the mouse will do as a controller, but with two players using mice the table gets cramped. In that case a joystick or a trackball is recommended.

You have to be careful in this game, and it doesn't reward frantic mouse-shoving or joystick-waggling. Precision brings better results.

The game's graphics are good and the drops and climbs the ball travels over feel real. The ball also obeys the mouse's commands logically. It follows the mouse even better than the ball follows the spinning of the trackball on the arcade machines. The sound is pretty monotonous. The various difficulty levels are enough to keep the interest up. After all, the coin-op version usually has a crowd around it too.

Moving the game from one level to the next takes about half a minute. Even though that passes for a rest break, the loading could be quicker.
