Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. 1990 KevätKauan sitten, kun Spectrumkin oli vielä hengissä, tuli yhtiöltä Red Shift -peli nimeltään Rebelstar Raiders. Peli kohosi nopeasti kulttipelin maineeseen, mutta hävisi Red Shiftin ottaessa Kon-kurssin. Nyt RSR on noussut unohduksesta uudella nimellä ja uljaampana kuin koskaan.
Laser Squad edustaa harvinaista lintua pelimaailmassa. Siinä ohjataan ryhmää avaruuscommandoja mies kerrallaan, tehtävien vaihdellessa salamurhasta taistelutehtäviin. Commando-tyyppisestä rytystelystä ei ole kyse, vaan taktiikka on avainsana.
Tehtävä alkaa varusteiden eli pyssyjen ja haarniskan sun muun ostamisella, jonka jälkeen miehet sijoitellaan kartalle. Liikkuminen ja menujen käsittely sujuu näppärästi joystickillä, ja pelissä on hyvin toteutettu "line of sight" eli miehet pystyvät näkemään vain mitä heidän näköpiirissään on. Tämä mahdollistaa esimerkiksi vihollisen hiipimisen takaapäin commandon kimppuun, ja lopputuloksena koko pelin ilmapiiri on hiuksianostattava. Mainittakoon vielä mahdollisuus jättää oma mies kytikseen, jolloin hän automaattisesti ampuu näkökentässään vilahtavia vihollisia.
Grafiikka on kuin Spectrumista reväistyä, mutta tämä on tarkoitettu kehumiseksi, sillä tarkkuusgrafiikalla tehdyt miehet ja taustat ovat yksityiskohtaisia ja tarkkoja. Erinomaiset graafiset efektit säestävät ammuskelua, kuten myös ihan asialliset äänet. Pelattavuus on korkeaa luokkaa. Erikoisplussana Laser Squadia voi pelata yksi tai kaksi "ihmistä". Lisäksi kuusnelosen levyversiossa ainakin on kaksi ylimääräistä tehtävää, jotka joutuu muihin koneisiin ja versioihin ostamaan erikseen. 16-bittiset versiot ovat klooneja kuusnelosesta, hiukan värkkäämmin grafiikoin.
Lähin vertailukohde Laser Squadille on ST-Amigan Breach, jonka Laser Squad päihittää mennen tullen. Todella erinomainen peli, jonka arvoa nostaa vielä Blade Softwaren lupaus julkaista lisää tehtävälevykkeitä.
1990 KevätLong ago, when even the Spectrum was still alive, the company Red Shift put out a game called Rebelstar Raiders. The game quickly rose to cult status, but vanished when Red Shift went bankrupt. Now RSR has risen from oblivion under a new name and more gallant than ever.
Laser Squad is a rare bird in the gaming world. In it you control a squad of space commandos one man at a time, with missions ranging from assassination to combat assignments. This is no Commando-style rough and tumble; tactics is the key word.
A mission starts with buying equipment, that is guns and armour and whatnot, after which the men are positioned on the map. Moving and working the menus goes nimbly with the joystick, and the game has a well-implemented "line of sight", meaning the men can only see what is within their field of view. This makes it possible, for example, for an enemy to sneak up on a commando from behind, and the end result is that the atmosphere of the whole game is hair-raising. Let me also mention the option to leave one of your men lying in wait, in which case he automatically shoots any enemies that flit across his field of vision.
The graphics look as if they had been ripped straight off the Spectrum, but this is meant as praise, since the men and backgrounds, done in high-resolution graphics, are detailed and sharp. Excellent graphic effects accompany the shooting, as does perfectly decent sound. The playability is top class. As a special bonus, Laser Squad can be played by one or two "humans". In addition, the Commodore 64 disk version at least has two extra missions, which you have to buy separately for the other machines and versions. The 16-bit versions are clones of the Commodore 64 one, with slightly more colourful graphics.
The closest point of comparison for Laser Squad is Breach on the ST and Amiga, which Laser Squad beats hands down. A truly excellent game, its value boosted further by Blade Software's promise to release more mission disks.
