Battle Squadron
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Pelin tarkoituksena on tuhota paha Barraxin Imperiumi.
Pelaajan alus liitelee yli hyvin tehdyn likaisenvihreän kraaterien pilkuttaman maaston.
1990 KevätBattle Squadron is, as the name suggests, a shoot'em-up, and a perfectly ordinary upward-scrolling shooter at that. Doesn't exactly wake up your interest, does it? Well, the initiated start waking up when they're told that the game is actually Hybris II. In case someone doesn't know Hybris, let it be said that it was a high-quality shooter equipped with fine graphics, superb effects and good music.
The start of the game doesn't inspire any sort of awe towards the programmer. The player's own ship doesn't look like anything special, though it is well animated. The backgrounds don't look like much either. A pleasant soundtrack chugs along in the background. But after playing for a while it turns out that this gaming session isn't going to be a short one after all.
The aim of the game is to destroy the evil Barrax Empire. First you cruise around the surface of the Barrax planet and then you burrow deeper underground through the openings that keep turning up. Once an underground section has been destroyed, you rise to the surface again, look for a new opening, go down, and so on. There's no point hurrying into these underground sections, since that's where you'll find the really big (and also really well made) aliens that no puny little laser will make a dent in. So it pays to cruise around the planet's surface until you've got some really good weapons in hand.
The player's ship glides over well-made, dirty-green terrain dotted with craters. All sorts of enemies come at you, and before you know it the first chance to get extra weapons comes along: a biggish enemy ship leaves behind a small colourful box, which the player then collects. The player would do well to wait for the "extra weapon box" to change colour and then collect the extra weapon matching that colour, since not all weapons bite on certain enemies as well as others do.
There are four basic types of weapon: orange fireballs, blue and green lasers, and red balls that fly off in every direction. The basic types come in a great many variants of differing power and looks. One of BS's best points is the really superb and versatile extra weapons. There's also the Nova Missile, a kind of smart bomb, of which you have three at the start. More can be collected, of course.
Since the playfield is wider than the monitor, you only see a narrow slice of it at a time, so the screen can also scroll sideways. Simultaneous two-player play is possible too, though this leads to battles on the other side of the screen as well, as the players "discuss" who that extra weapon really belonged to in the end. Confusion can also be caused by each player yanking the screen in their own direction.
BS's most praiseworthy aspect is the superb effects, which include both the mighty extra weapons and various little tricks that add hugely to the interest of the game. Of these, let's mention the enemy that turns up every now and then and brings to mind the monster from the film Predator.
Battle Squadron is a game worth buying, and your interest in it won't run out any time soon. I myself found, with bloodshot eyes, that I had played for many hours straight, even though I'm not especially fond of shoot'em-ups.
