Lancaster

Pelaaja istutetaan toisen maailmansodan aikaisen pommikoneen taka-ampujan paikalle.

Ilmassa konetta ohjataan maaliinsa liikuttamalla hiiren kohdistinta kartan päällä. Kaikki menee hyvin siihen saakka, kunnes saavutaan Saksan yläpuolelle, jolloin kaiuttimista kajahtaa lentäjän varoitushuuto: sakuja takana.

Grafiikka on aika karkeaa, vaikka silloin tällöin pelaajaa ilahduttaa kohtalainen animaatio. Kaikki vektorigrafiikka-osuudet ovat kerrassaan karmeita. äänet ovat aivan mitäänsanomattomat, lentäjän digitoidut kommentit on digitoitu varmaankin yhdellä kilohertsillä, sillä niistä ei saa kirveelläkään mitään selvää. Hiiriohjaus toimii ihan hyvin, mutta pelattavuus on silti sanonko mistä.

Vaikka peli-idea onkin mielestäni kohtalainen, uupuu toteutus todella pahasti.

1990 KevätActual Screenshots, owned by the English CRL, has not so far managed to impress anyone with its games. Its first game, a gladiator gag that was moderately amusing for the first 10 seconds and whose name for one reason or another escapes me right now, was boring as hell. The same plague seems to be sinking its claws into Lancaster too.

The player is plonked into the rear gunner's seat of a Second World War bomber. The manual spends a few pages praising the splendid qualities of the Lancaster aircraft and then leaves explaining the game well alone, almost.

At the start of the game the player picks a crew for the aircraft, each of whom has their own strengths and weaknesses. Then you study the maps a little and plot the flight routes. After that it's time for take-off. The game loads away for a few moments and then pops up a landscape done in filled vector graphics, showing a hangar and the Lancaster. After a while the Lancaster starts to taxi and finally takes off. Sounds good, but to be honest the execution is truly ghastly; I haven't seen vector graphics this slow and stiff in a couple of years.

In the air, the plane is steered to its target by moving the mouse pointer over the map. All goes well until you get over Germany, at which point the pilot's warning shout rings out of the speakers: Jerries on our tail. The game jumps to the rear gunner's view and it's time for the player to grab the mouse in a steady hand.

Up come German fighters done in slow filled vector graphics, which dive at you, fire a couple of bursts and slip away. You steer the gunsight with the mouse and try to hit the planes. After a while, once the attacking planes have been destroyed, the game switches back to the map view. A short flight later the bombing run is upon you, and it's so childishly easy that... well! Then all that's left is the trip home.

The graphics are pretty crude, although now and then the player is cheered by a passable bit of animation. All the vector graphics sections are downright horrible. The sound is utterly bland; the pilot's digitised comments must have been digitised at one kilohertz, since you can't make out a word of them for love nor money. The mouse control works just fine, but the playability is still, how shall I put it, from where the sun doesn't shine.

Although I think the game idea is passable, the execution falls badly short. Actual Screenshot's programmers shouldn't attempt anything their skills are clearly not up to. The game isn't a complete dud, but nobody plays it for fun. A game like this just can't hold your interest; you too should give Lancaster a wide berth, unless you specifically want a Lancaster game to decorate your cupboard.
