Wolfman!

1988CRL on tullut jo kuuluisaksi uusista seikkailupeleistään, joille on Englannissa lyöty ikärajat.

1988CRL has already become famous for its new adventure games, which have been slapped with age limits in England. These horror-themed games are said to give you goosebumps with their digitised pictures and harrowing text. The subjects so far have been Frankenstein and Jack the Ripper, and in CRL's latest horror adventure, Wolfman, you have to deal with a werewolf. Brrr!

At the start of the game you wake up at home with your hands, face and clothes covered in blood. The nightmare preying on your mind turns out to be true when you realise that, as a werewolf, you have killed a young girl. You set off on a desperate flight to find a cure for the curse. Along the way you meet the maiden Nardia, with whose help you have a chance, after an arduous journey, to lift the curse - if the two of you stay alive long enough. As the game goes on, many dangers threaten, not the least of which is the beast lurking within the hero himself.

Because of its size, the game comes on cassette in three separate parts, which are played through one after the other. A large share of the memory is eaten up by the digitised pictures, so the game itself isn't particularly big. There are rather few locations, and their descriptions are limited to the things that matter for getting on in the game. So the difficulty level is fairly low and progress towards the solution is logical. In places the game manages to create a really gruesome atmosphere, and the digitised pictures of mangled heads do wonders for it in that respect. A neat detail is that when the main character turns into a werewolf, the colour of the text changes too, from white to black.

Because of its weak parser, the game doesn't understand very many words, so there's no point expecting anything on the level of Infocom or Magnetic Scrolls. The game won't satisfy demanding adventure fans. There's no sound at all, naturally.

The best or the worst thing about the game is the atmosphere, which is like something torn straight out of Yöjutut. Whether that's sick, scary or laughable is a matter of taste. The game can't be recommended for the littlest ones, but few under-sixteens have the language skills or the interest to play text games anyway, so censorship is hardly needed. For the proper feeling, stick the cassette in the tape deck when the moon is full and kill the lights.
