Grave Yardage
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Pallona toimivan lentävän silmän hankkiminen oman joukkueen haltuun on sallittua keinolla millä tahansa.
Valmentajan homma onkin huomattavasti mielenkiintoisempi. Valittavana on usea eri hyökkäys- ja puolustustaktiikk, joiden nimet kuvaavat mainiosti taktiikan tavoitetta. Esim. Kill'Em All selittää tyhmällekin valmentajalle mistä on kysymys.
Valitettavasti hyvän idean päälle on rakennettu kehno peli.
1990 KevätAmerican football with zombies, monsters and mythical creatures. That's the basic idea of Grave Yardage. The rules differ from real Am. football in that this game doesn't really have any rules to speak of. Getting the flying eyeball that serves as the ball into your own team's possession is allowed by any means whatsoever. So the players lug around aids suited to the game, such as spell ingredients, cudgels, clubs and swords.
The human fumbling about on the better side of the computer screen acts as both player and coach. There's not much variety to be found in the playing; it consists mainly of moving your character to the right place at the right time. If that part goes without a hitch, all that's left is to beat the opponent with a club or some other suitable implement.
The coach's job, on the other hand, is considerably more interesting. There are several different offensive and defensive tactics to choose from, whose names describe the aim of each tactic splendidly. E.g. Kill'Em All explains to even the dimmest coach what it's all about. The coach can also design their own tactics.
You can pick the team yourself too, but the handiest thing is to let Fate do the necessary work. The coach can tell Fate whether they want the toughest, fastest, strongest or most balanced team on the field. The menu also has a command called Auto Prayer, whereupon Fate sends out a team that will force its way through those last crucial inches towards the opponent's goal.
After all this build-up it's natural to expect an excellent game. Unfortunately a poor game has been built on top of a good idea. Although the graphics aren't completely awful (but not brilliant either), the playability is far too poor for there to be any talk of gaming pleasure. The sound is the usual PC beeping; nobody could even be bothered to cram in a few little samples. GY isn't a total failure, but with an idea this good, I would have hoped for better finishing.
