Sentinel Worlds I: Future Magic

1989 KevätKun Sentinel Worlds I ensimmäisen kerran ilmestyi näkökenttääni, jokin sisäinen vaisto kertoi minulle oitis, että jos tuon buuttaat, niin olet mennyttä kalua. Mutta minähän olen jo tarpeeksi elänytkin.

Future Magic kuuluu sarjaamme ISOT roolipelit.

Hänellä on valittavanaan useita eri toimintovaihtoehtoja.

Henkilöiden kanssa käytävät keskustelut toimivat luontevasti valikoiden avulla, grafiikka on PC-peleille ainutlaatuista, ikkunointi näyttää kerralla kaikki tarpeelliset tiedot eli teknisesti todella nautittavaa. Perpektiivinäkymän keskellä oleva kypärän silmikkoon heijastettu tutkakuva on hyvä esimerkki siitä, miten peliin on todella kyetty vangitsemaan aito science fictionin 'sense of wonder'.

Kotelon kannessa kerrotaan pelin olevan tieteisroolimysteeri.

1989 KevätWhen Sentinel Worlds I first appeared in my field of vision, some inner instinct told me straight away that if you boot that one up, you're dead meat. But then again, I've lived long enough already.

Future Magic belongs in our series of BIG role-playing games. Not that there's anything wrong with the playing area being the infinity of space, but the surface of every planet turns out to be packed with crowds like Stockmann's Christmas sale - and every single one of them has something to tell you. On top of that, the places seem to be teeming with assorted creatures who reckon you'd make a nice change to their monotonous diet.

The game's opening situation, in brief, is this: the freighters carrying supplies to the Federation's new colonies of Rouyn and Mistassini have been attacked more and more often. Who is behind the attacks - and why, that nobody knows.

The player commands the five-strong crew of one of the fighters sent to guard the convoys. They have several different courses of action to choose from. They can start blasting enemies in space and capturing their ships in the hope of loot. On the other hand, to find out where the attackers come from you also have to visit bases and planets, and that's when things start getting really interesting.

The makers of the program have done a really meticulous job. Conversations with characters flow naturally through menus, the graphics are unique for a PC game, and the window layout shows all the necessary information at once - in other words, technically a real treat. The radar image projected onto the helmet visor in the middle of the perspective view is a good example of how the game really has managed to capture that genuine science fiction 'sense of wonder'.

The box cover describes the game as a science-fiction role-playing mystery. I have to admit that rarely has an advertising line been more on the mark. Besides being a role-playing game that works and a science fiction game of the very top rank, Sentinel Worlds has a plot as deep as a black hole. If the Ultimas fill a notebook with notes, this one fills a book. That's because all sorts of local squabbles are tied up with the main mission. Sometimes you have to broker peace between the cattle ranchers and the farmers, sometimes flatten the temple of some nasty alien-ish creatures.

Something of the game's depth is perhaps shown by the fact that, with no flagging of interest, it took three hours from the start of the game to reach the first man-to-man fight. Let's hope EOA converts this one to the Amiga and the ST as well, just as it did with good old Starflight.
