Dogs of War

1990 KevätDogs of War on käsitteenä erittäin mielenkiintoinen: ohjelmoija Steve Bak sai tehtäväkseen tehdä Command-Ikari Warriors -pelin, joka olisi genren huipentuma. Eli siinä siis pitäisi olla kaikki mahdollinen ja vähän lisää. Mitenköhän lienee?

Ensivaikutelma on positiivinen. Ostettavissa on pistooleita, rynnäreitä, liekinheittimiä, sinkoja sun muuta reipasta sotalelua. Eri aseiden tulivoima ja kantomatka tietysti vaihtelevat.

Ja sitten sotimaan. Aseiden vaihto sujuu mukavasti huitaisemalla pelaajasta riippuen jommalle kummalle puolelle näppäimistöä. Pelissä ei muuten ole yllätyksiä: tuttu commandokloonihan se. "Uutuutena" kuvaruudun vieritys siirtyin välillä pystysuorasta vaakasuoraan.

Grafiikka on Bakgrafiikkaa eli oudon laimean näköistä. Spriteanimaatio oli jo Ikarissa paljon parempaa, ja äänipuoli on lähinnä aneemista. Paljon tietysti riippuu siitä, pitääkö yleensä Bakin tavasta värittää kuvaruutua.

Estetiikka unohtaen on Dogs of War kuitenkin hyvä peli, itse asiassa. Kun Elite joskus pukkaa 16-bittisen Commandonsa pihalle on vertailuja kiva suorittaa.

1990 KevätAs a concept, Dogs of War is extremely interesting: programmer Steve Bak was given the job of making a Command-Ikari Warriors game that would be the culmination of the genre. So, in other words, it was supposed to have everything possible and a bit more besides. I wonder how that turned out?

The first impression is positive. The player can pick just the one they want from several different missions, so in practice you're not stuck grinding through the same crummy level a hundred times. The missions earn money, which is spent on buying equipment. Up for sale are pistols, assault rifles, flamethrowers, bazookas and all sorts of other jolly war toys. The firepower and range of the different weapons vary, of course.

And then off to war. Switching weapons goes nicely by taking a swipe at one side of the keyboard or the other, depending on which player you are. Otherwise the game holds no surprises: it's the same old commando clone, after all. As a "novelty", the screen scrolling switches now and then from vertical to horizontal.

The graphics are Bak graphics, meaning strangely washed-out looking. The sprite animation was already much better back in Ikari, and the sound side is anaemic at best. A lot depends, of course, on whether you like Bak's way of colouring the screen in general.

Aesthetics aside, though, Dogs of War is a good game, as a matter of fact. When Elite someday pushes its 16-bit Commando out the door, it'll be fun to run some comparisons.
