Day of The Pharaoh
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. 1990 KevätDay of The Pharaoh sijoittuu ajallisesti muinaiseen Egyptiin. Pelaaja aloittaa tiensä Egyptin hallitsijan tuolia kohti myymällä kamelinnahkoja kiskurihinnalla kauppamatkustajille. Reittejä hallitsijaksi on monia, mutta vain nokkela pelaaja löytää helpoimmat tavat. Työläs tapa on tietysti tehdä hurjasti töitä, mutta se kestää ikuisuuden. Paljon parempia tapoja ovat rikkaisiin naimisiin meneminen ja virkamiesten lahjominen.
Kun valtaa ja rikkautta alkaa kerääntyä, astuvat kuvaan muut muinaisen Egyptin askareet. Jos johtaja mielii pysyä kansansa suosiossa, on hänen uhrattava jumalille. Voi sitä hallitsijaa, joka valitsee väärän jumalan palvontansa kohteeksi.
Sotiminen oli myös läheinen asia egyptiläisille. Ensin hallitsija valitsee vastustajan, joka häntä risoo erityisesti ja sitten matkaan. Ensin "vaarallinen" venematka, jonka aikana pitää varoa haaksirikkoutumista ja sitten "hurja" kepitys hevosvaljakolla nuolia ammuskellen paikallaan seisoviin vihollisiin.
Ohjelmoijat ovat ottaneet yleisesti cinemawaremaisen lähestymisen, ja peli onkin sekoitus strategiaa ja toimintaosuuksia. Toimintaosuudet, kuten juuri sotaretket, ovat kuitenkin vain kalpeita kopioita Cinemawaren vastaavista.
Grafiikka ei DOTP:ssa liiemmin häikäise, saksalaiset kun eivät koskaan ole kummemmin grafiikan päälle tajunneet. Amigaa ei rasiteta turhaan myöskään musiikilla, ehkä hieman egyptiläiseksi luonnehdittava pimputus soi mitäänsanomattomasti taustalla. Yleisesti ottaen tylsä peli ei parane yhtään huonosti suunnitelluilla toimintaosuuksilla.
Strategiapelinä DOTP menettelee kyllä, mutta saman yhtiön Joan of Arc pesee tämän kyllä mennen tullen. Kokeilkaa ennenkuin ostatte, ettei ala jälkeen päin kaduttamaan.
1990 KevätDay of The Pharaoh is set, time-wise, in ancient Egypt. The player starts out on the road to the ruler's seat of Egypt by selling camel hides at extortionate prices to travelling merchants. There are many routes to becoming ruler, but only a clever player finds the easiest ways. The laborious way is of course to work like mad, but that takes forever. Much better ways are marrying into money and bribing officials.
Once power and wealth start piling up, the other chores of ancient Egypt enter the picture. A leader who wants to stay in favour with the people has to make sacrifices to the gods. Woe to the ruler who picks the wrong god to worship.
Warfare was also close to the Egyptians' hearts. First the ruler picks an opponent who is a particular thorn in the side, and then off we go. First a "dangerous" boat trip, during which you have to watch out for shipwreck, and then a "wild" dash in a horse-drawn chariot, firing arrows at enemies standing stock-still.
The programmers have generally taken a Cinemaware-style approach, and indeed the game is a mix of strategy and action sections. The action sections, such as the war campaigns just mentioned, are however only pale copies of their Cinemaware counterparts.
The graphics in DOTP don't exactly dazzle, seeing as the Germans have never been all that clued up about graphics. Nor is the Amiga needlessly strained with music: a plinking that might perhaps be described as a bit Egyptian tinkles away blandly in the background. A game that's dull on the whole isn't improved one bit by badly designed action sections.
As a strategy game DOTP passes muster, sure, but the same company's Joan of Arc wipes the floor with this one any day of the week. Try before you buy, so you don't end up regretting it afterwards.
