Conqueror

Alkuperäinen Conquerorhan on Archimedeksen peli, jonka julkaisi Superior Software yli vuosi sitten.

Srategisessa osuudessa tarkoitus on miehittää tietty kohde minuutin ajan päästämättä vihollistankkeja edes lähelle. Lisäoptioina mahdollisuus tykistötuleen ja tiedustelukoneeseen, pisteiden kustannuksella. Pisteitä käytetään uusien ja parempien tankkien hankkimiseen. Enintään pelaaja voi komentaa 16 tankkia.

Robottitankkeja määräillään erillisellä karttaruudulla varsin niukalla käskyvarastolla. Määränpään lisäksi niitä on kaksi: aja ja seis. Enempää ei silti tarvitse, sillä tankit osaavat puolustautua kohdatessaan vihollisen, jopa siinä määrin, että pikkutankki ottaa telaketjut alleen, jos törmää isoon jätkään. Komentotankkiaan saa vapaasti vaihtaa.

Viruksesta tuttu yksityiskohtaisuus hallitsee Conqueroria.

1990 KevätWhere can you drive if you've got a 68-tonne Königstiger tank with a 110 mm gun? Anywhere you like. So now even this ancient joke has been converted into a game.

The original Conqueror, as you know, is an Archimedes game, released by Superior Software more than a year ago. There was talk of an ST/Amiga conversion, but that's where the data ran out. Then out of the blue a 16-bit version of the game came rolling out, and from the German Rainbow Arts of all people.

There's a dozen tanks: four Allied, four German and four Russian. Opponents are chosen according to historical fact, so a USA-USSR international match isn't on.

Conqueror offers three game levels: arcade, strategy and a halfway house between the two. In the easiest version the player controls one tank, and the idea is to survive ever-growing numbers of ever-better enemy tanks. In the in-between mode more of your own tanks join in, and the ultimate goal is to sweep the field clear of enemies. In the strategic section the idea is to hold a particular objective for a minute without letting enemy tanks even get close. Extra options are artillery fire and a reconnaissance plane, at the cost of points. Points are used to acquire new and better tanks. The player can command at most 16 tanks.

The robot tanks are bossed around on a separate map screen with a rather meagre stock of orders. Besides the destination there are two: go and stop. You don't need any more than that, though, since the tanks know how to defend themselves when they meet the enemy, even to the extent that a little tank takes to its tracks if it runs into a big bloke. You can switch your command tank freely.

If Virus's controls made you cry, Conqueror goes one better. The tank is steered one track at a time, and on top of that you control the turret and the gun elevation. There are three different control options, but practice is required, and lots of it. Two players can control the tank at the same time, one driving and the other looking after the turret. Arguments will probably arise from the fact that both of them can shoot. Thank the Lord, when playing alone you can hand either the driver or the gunner over to computer control. I drove with the joystick myself and let the machine do the shooting, which worked quite well.

Conqueror is no simple shoot-'em-up. The tanks have four armour values, for front, side and rear armour alike, a speed that varies with the terrain, and the gun has both a range and an armour penetration, which means any tank at all can take quite a lot before it's left smoking in the landscape. You see, even a hit takes into account both the distance and the angle of impact. There's none of the real joy of quick destruction.

The first glance is startling: Conqueror looks just like Braben's masterpiece Zarch/Virus. The graphics are actually better than in Virus. The rolling landscape is filled with realistic-looking trees, rivers and roads cut across the terrain, and cute little villages with their churches and houses add colour. Everything in the landscape can also be destroyed.

The attention to detail familiar from Virus rules Conqueror. The tank leaves track marks, the shells leave a smoking crater, and so on. Only the small size of the visible playfield and a certain lack of ergonomics keep Conqueror from rising into the true-classics league.

Conqueror is not a simulator (unless tanks repair their damage in 20 seconds), nor a shoot-'em-up, but an interesting hybrid that is guaranteed to appeal to only a smallish portion of gamers. Like Virus, it will become a cult game.
