Cabal
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. 1990 KevätMikroBITIN kokkikoulussa tehdään tänään maistuva peli. Otamme yhden Operation Wolfin. Leikkaamme scrollauksen tarpeettomana pois. Siirrämme kameraa taaksepäin, jotta kommandourho mahtuu kokonaan kuvaan. Maustamme keitoksen mahdollisuudella kerätä tehokkaampia aseita ja Voila! Meillä on Cabal.
1990 KevätToday in MikroBITTI's cookery school we are making a tasty game. We take one Operation Wolf. We cut out the scrolling as unnecessary. We move the camera back so that the commando hero fits entirely in the picture. We season the brew with the chance to collect more powerful weapons and Voila! We have Cabal.
Considering that Ocean has OpWolf II, a.k.a. OpThunderbolt, on the way, you might wonder why Cabal has seen the light of day. Playing it clears the matter up. The C-64 OpWolf was, relatively speaking, very good, but for one reason or another Cabal wipes the floor with it.
The killer, bouncing about mostly along the bottom edge of the screen, terminates enemy soldiers with automatic weapons and grenades. But the nasty baddie goes and throws tanks, helicopters, jet fighters and other nastiness into the fray. Luckily, eliminating these earns you machine guns, bazookas and other bonus junk as a reward. Buildings shield the commando from enemy fire until they crumble under the tornado of lead.
The sprites are excellently defined and animated, with the background graphics a notch on the ordinary side. The brisk rattle of the machine gun and the other effects give the playing the beefiness you'd want. Odd in itself: even though the game is controlled with the joystick, this form of control works surprisingly well even when the action speeds up.
That little creature that relishes simulated killing, lurking inside the human hide, smacks its lips contentedly after a helping of Cabal.
