Operation Wolf

1989 Kevät"Mie on Rokan Antti ja hää, hää o Operaatio Sus." Operation Wolf, erittäin suositun peliautomaatin kotiversio kuului ehdottomasti joulun -88 odotetuimpiin peleihin .

Operaatio Susi tähtää sotavankien vapautukseen. Ruutu scrollailee hiljakseen yli erilaisten näkymien ja sotilaita, tankkeja sun muita poukkoilee näkyviin. Pelaaja tilittää sisimpäänsä luotettavalla M-16-rynnärillään, jossa on ilmeisesti 30 mm sinko piipun alla (terkkuja Tony Montanalle), sillä raketitkin kuuluvat aseistukseen.

1989 Kevät"Me is Antti Rokka an' 'e, 'e is Op'ration Wolf." Operation Wolf, the home version of a hugely popular arcade machine, was without doubt one of the most eagerly awaited games of Christmas '88.

Operation Wolf is aimed at freeing prisoners of war. The screen scrolls slowly across various scenes, and soldiers, tanks and whatnot bounce into view. The player pours out their innermost feelings with their trusty M-16 assault rifle, which apparently has a 30 mm bazooka under the barrel (say hi to Tony Montana), since rockets are part of the armament too. The enemies take potshots at the screen, and the damage meter rises, and rises... Could this be the end of the Dynamic Duo?

The Atari ST and Amiga have such a command of graphics that their Wolf has been hoovered straight out of the coin-op. The versions are otherwise identical, but the Amiga wins out with its considerably prettier scrolling and better sound. The constant and really badly designed disk-swapping does grate, though, and the long loading times, especially on the Amiga, are not exactly a joy. Still, playing with the mouse is wonderfully comfortable and makes an acceptable alternative to the original UZI. A truly enjoyable violence epic in the Christmas spirit.

Nor is the C-64 version half bad. The graphics are perfectly acceptable, and the only thing to nitpick about besides the compulsory multiload is the practical necessity of using a joystick. The program offers the option of using a NEOS mouse, but who's got one of those? The game responds to joystick use by making itself easier, which is quite right too. Naturally, though, it doesn't reach the level of the 16-bitters.

Despite its name, Operation Wolf is no wolf, as Finns call a dud, but one of those rare hyped games that hold up under the pressure of advance expectations.
