Amerikkalainen Software Toolworks (edellinen peli Life And Death) murskasi kuitenkin toiveeni. Muutaman karate-, judo- tai jonkun vastaavan mäiskimisleffan tähti Bruce Lee on nostettu nimimieheksi tähän peliin ja mikä parasta, Software Toolworksin ei tarvitse maksaa miehelle edes rojalteja pelistä, sillä sälli on maannut kuolleena jo vuosia. Niinpä pelin nimi onkin lievästi ironinen.

Peli aloittaa aivan alusta, eli harjoitussalilta.

1990 KevätSo the sneaker-swinging games have found their way onto the PC as well. And here I was hoping the PC would at least be spared those. The American Software Toolworks (previous game Life And Death) crushed my hopes, however. Bruce Lee, star of a few karate, judo or some similar thumping flicks, has been promoted to the name above the title of this game, and best of all, Software Toolworks doesn't even have to pay the man royalties for the game, since the bloke has been lying dead for years now. So the game's name is mildly ironic.

The game starts right from the beginning, that is, in the training hall. The player can practise kicks and punches, and pick a means of control (joystick or keys). The keyboard is the better option, since there are REALLY a lot of moves, and PC joysticks aren't yet at the same technical level as the sticks on the Amiga, C-64 or ST.

As a special feature the player can define one macro key, into which you can stick three moves in a row. It's slick in a fight when, from a single button, Bruce first slips a sharp right straight smack in the opponent's face, then a nifty spinning kick to the stomach and finally an explosive flying kick right on the nose. If everything goes like clockwork, the opponent is lying on the canvas very quickly indeed.

After the training hall the player is ready for the mission, at least in the player's own opinion. The instructor, however, disagrees, and the player has to prove their competence in two sparring bouts. These sparring bouts are where the road of most would-be Bruces comes to a dead stop, since the computer-controlled sparring partners are embarrassingly skilled. What's more, the PC isn't really suited to games like this, where the game has to react to the player's command within a fraction of a second.

There isn't even as much playability as in the dreariest C-64 karate games. And then once the opponent manages to drive the player into a corner and starts dishing out combinations, the player's Bruce can't do a thing any more. Every move you start is cut short by a quick counter slashed out by the opponent.

Despite the poor playability the game isn't a complete dud. You do need patience, but if you've paid full price for the game, you'd think you could find the patience too. The graphics aren't dazzling, but perfectly passable. The "music", on the other hand, not even a pig could listen to without squealing, and the game doesn't recognise sound cards, not even if one walked up to it in the street and punched it on the snout.

The difficulty, the poor playability and the ghastly sound don't exactly invite a rematch, but the difficulty can be beaten with practice, the playability perhaps likewise, and the sound can be switched off. So try before you buy.
