Battle Valley

Kiusana on tiukka aikaraja, jonka umpeuduttua pahat terroristit tuhoavat maailman. Olisi mielenkiintoista tietää, miten se onnistuu kahdella keskimatkan ydinohjuksella. Jos ne olisivat mannertenvälisiä, niin looginen ratkaisu olisi tähdätä yksi kummallekin napajäätikölle (Will you shut up Mr Spock!).

Tankkiosuus on vieläkin tylsempi.

1990 KevätBattle Valley was originally a budget game programmed for the C-64, so it's rather interesting that somebody bothered to convert it to the 16-bit machines. After all, these days it's more the rule than the exception that games are first designed on the ST and Amiga and then crammed by brute force into their 8-bit little brothers.

The game's backstory spins some yarn about terrorists, nuclear missiles and other things of that sort, so apparently it's time once again to dig the war gear out of the closet.

The game's events unfold in two stages: first you have to collect pontoons with the winch that comes as standard equipment on the helicopter and repair the destroyed bridges. At the same time you tidy the hillsides of surplus junk and, when need be, haul up fuel and ammo. After that you can go cruising off to the terrorists' headquarters in a tank that amusingly follows the topological structure of the hills (meaning the surface). To add to the torment there's a tight time limit, and once it runs out the evil terrorists destroy the world. It would be interesting to know how they manage that with two medium-range nuclear missiles. If they were intercontinental, the logical solution would be to aim one at each polar ice cap (Will you shut up Mr Spock!).

Technically speaking, there's nothing to fault in the way the game has been done. The background scrolls beautifully in three layers, and you won't find any stray judder even if you go looking for it. But the game's content gives a somewhat anaemic first impression: you fly the helicopter right or left and fire off a couple of shots every now and then. The tank section is even duller.

The same frugal approach carries on in the graphics, whose overall look is monotonous and down-to-earth in its colouring (except for the sky, whose blue shading is really lovely). The sound effects don't rise much above average either, but the music is at least perfectly listenable.

Battle Valley isn't cut out to be a hardline shoot'em-up, since next to the likes of Silkworm it's a leisurely Sunday stroll, but as a whole it's interestingly put together. Endlessly grinding through the same routine, though, gradually drags the interest down to the level of the TV programmes that come on at three in the morning.

Yaaawn. Right, this boy is resetting the Amiga and shaking off the sleep by tossing something a bit more rip-roaring into the disk drive, like Datastorm.
