1991 SyksyMuukalaisten liittoutuma on tuhonnut Maan, niinpä tehtävänä on antaa turpiin koko porukalle ihan vain koston vuoksi. Surullisen kaukana ovat vanhat hyvät Invasion of the Body Snatchersin ajat, jolloin vainoharhaisia asenteita vielä osattiin syöttää tyylikkään hienovaraisesti periaatteella "muukalaiset soluttautuvat joukkoomme saastuttamaan kunnon kansalaisten ruumiinnesteitä". Tarkkailkaa pelien kehysjuonia.
Battlestorm siis on ties kuinka mones lisäys avaruusalusten, laserien ja tunnistamattomien lentomömmöjen epäpyhään kolminaisuuteen. Kaavahan on se, että pelaajalla on lentopeli, jonka ulkomuoto on jokin niistä kolmesta, sillä lennellään vierivän taustan yllä ja kumiritsan maalina on pienten alusten muodostelmia sekä muutama vähän isompi emoalus.
Ainoa marginaalinen harvinaisuus on taustan vieriminen kaikkiin suuntiin. Battlestormissa on peräti etäistä sukulaisuutta Asteroidsiin.
1991 SyksyAn alliance of aliens has destroyed the Earth, so the mission is to give the whole lot of them a good thumping, purely for revenge. Sadly far behind us are the good old days of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, when people still knew how to feed us paranoid attitudes with stylish subtlety, on the principle of "the aliens are infiltrating our ranks to contaminate the bodily fluids of decent citizens". Keep a close eye on the plots of games.
So Battlestorm is the umpteenth addition to the unholy trinity of spaceships, lasers and unidentified flying blobs. The formula, of course, is that the player gets a flying machine shaped like one of those three, it gets flown around above a scrolling background, and the targets for your slingshot are formations of small ships plus a few slightly bigger motherships.
The only marginal rarity is that the background scrolls in all directions. Battlestorm even bears a distant family resemblance to Asteroids. At least if you choose the harder of the two available control methods, in which the ship is rotated by moving the joystick sideways and the throttle is worked by moving it up and down. Alternatively, the ship goes wherever you wrench the stick. It won't make a full about-turn, which is why you have to learn a rather clumsy-feeling stick-twirling technique.
There's nothing to complain about on the technical side of the execution, but all the more in the content. The enemies' squiggles repeat a few dull basic patterns for ever and ever, amen, and there aren't even any decent extra weapons on offer. The aim is not to spread anti-action-game propaganda, but merely to point out that the same thing has been done better so many times that you can't praise Battlestorm without making a laughing stock of yourself.
