Willow

1989 SyksyLucasfilmin viimeisin sankarieepos Willow on saatavilla suuressa maailmassa lautapelinä The Willow Game.

Pergamentille piirretty tarina toimii erikoisella tavalla peliosioiden valikkona. Pelaaja siirtyy pelitapahtumien keskelle osoittamalla näytöllä liikkuvalla taikasauvalla muutamaa tarinan avainsanaa, joista ensimmäinen on Dungeons.

Pelin ensimmäisessä osassa Elora Danan pitää kiidättää turvaan Nockmaarin linnan labyrinttimaisista vankiluolista. Vankiluolat näytetään Elora Danania turvaan kiikuttavan Ethnan näkökulmasta, ja tämän osapelin grafiikka on Willowin parasta antia. Vankiluolista selviydyttyään pelaajan on kiiruhdettava vartijoita ja Kuoleman Koiria vilisevän metsän halki Daikinin tienristeykseen. Tienristeyksessä pelitaitoa ei paljon kysytä, sillä ainoa tehtävä on valita umpimähkään kahdesta häkistä se, jossa majailee Elora Dananin seuraava seuralainen Madmartigan.

Niin kansalaiskunnoltaan koeteltu sankari kuin onkin, Madmartigan joutuu suojatteineen Bavmordan uskotun kenraalin Kaelin vangiksi. pakomatka suoritetaan kelkkailemalla kilvellä pitkin jääluolia. Seuraavaksi Madmartiganin huolena on kenraali Kaelin päivien päättäminen kaksintaistelussa Nockmaarin linnan muureilla. Harvemmin näkee näin tökerösti toteutettua taistelua edes halpapeleissä, mutta kärsivällisyydellä tästäkin selviää.

Taikojen tekeminen on hauskinta puuhaa koko pelissä ja jaksaa kiinnostaa useamman minuutin ajan. Loitsuja syntyy valitsemalla ruudun alalaidassa jököttävistä kolmestatoista kirjainsymbolista oikeassa järjestyksessä kolme tilanteeseen sopivaa merkkiä. Fin Razielin metamorfoosit väärien valintojen seurauksena edustavat pelin ainoata tahallista komiikkaa.

Pelin viimeistä osaa, jossa oikea taika muodostuu yhdeksästä oikeassa järjestyksessä olevasta merkistä, ei voi harjoitella etukäteen. Vaan haitanneeko tuo mitään, sillä useimpien pelaajien mielenkiinto on lopahtanut jo pelin aiempien osien tuijottelussa. Pelattavuus on nollan tietämissä, audiopuoli on olematon ja grafiikallakaan peli ei voi kehuskella. Willowissa on oltava taikaa, jos siitä tulee myyntimenestys.

1989 SyksyLucasfilm's latest heroic epic Willow is available out in the wide world as a board game, The Willow Game. To squeeze the market potential created by the film bone dry, Willow has now also seen the light of the electron guns, in the form of a computer game whipped up by Mindscape.

The game is split into seven parts, which you can practise getting through in any order you like, as much as your soul can stand. This is a very handy option, since in the game proper the parts follow each other in the order the story dictates, on a "one slip and you're done" basis. The first fatal mistake sends the player back to the start of the story, so without the practice option getting acquainted with the later parts would take inhuman patience.

At the start of the game the screen tells the story of how Willow Ufgood saves a child named Elora Danan and, after manifold adventures, overthrows the evil queen Bavmorda. The story, drawn on parchment, doubles in a peculiar way as the menu for the game sections. The player is moved into the thick of the action by pointing, with a magic wand that moves around the screen, at a few key words in the story, the first of which is Dungeons.

In the first part of the game Elora Danan must be whisked to safety from the labyrinthine dungeons of Nockmaar castle. The dungeons are shown from the point of view of Ethna, who is carrying Elora Danan to safety, and the graphics in this sub-game are the best Willow has to offer. Having made it out of the dungeons, the player has to hurry through a forest swarming with guards and Death Dogs to the Daikini crossroads. At the crossroads not much gaming skill is called for, since the only task is to pick, completely at random, which of two cages houses Elora Danan's next companion, Madmartigan.

Hero of thoroughly tested civic fitness though he may be, Madmartigan ends up, along with his charges, a prisoner of Bavmorda's trusted general Kael. The escape is made by sledding on a shield through ice caves. Next, Madmartigan's worry is putting an end to general Kael's days in a duel on the walls of Nockmaar castle. You rarely see such clumsily done combat even in budget games, but with patience you'll get through this too.

Casting spells is the most fun thing to do in the whole game, and it manages to hold your interest for several minutes on end. Spells are created by picking, in the right order, three symbols suited to the situation from the thirteen letter symbols squatting at the bottom of the screen. Fin Raziel's metamorphoses as a result of wrong choices represent the game's only intentional comedy.

The last part of the game, where the correct spell is made up of nine symbols in the right order, can't be practised beforehand. Not that that is likely to bother anyone, since most players' interest will already have fizzled out while staring at the earlier parts of the game. Playability is somewhere around zero, the audio side is nonexistent and the game has nothing to boast about in the graphics department either. There will have to be magic in Willow if it is to become a sales success.
