Times of Lore
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Rauha huutaa palauttajaansa.
Times of Loressa yhdistyy toimintapelinhelppous j vauhti roolipelien monipuolisuuteen (ainakin osittain).
Times of Loren erottaa normaalista toimintaseikkailusta mahdollisuus (itseasiassa pakko) keskustella Albarethin muiden asukkaiden kanssa.
Teknisesti kuusnelosen Times of Lore on todella hiottu.
Tärkeintä on pelin sujuva kulkeminen.
Tarujen aika muistuttaa varsin paljon edesmennyttä Amiga-klassikkoa Faery Tale. Onneksi jatko-osa on jo tulossa.
1989 KevätThings are not going well in Albareth. High King Valwyn has been missing for a good twenty years now, and the land's good fortune is starting to crumble. The creatures of darkness have crawled out of their holes and lie in wait for travellers. Peace is crying out for someone to restore it.
Times of Lore combines the ease and pace of an action game with the variety of role-playing games (at least partly). The player seeks their future in the vast land of Albareth, which also includes caves and buildings you can visit. For your character you can choose between a gallant knight, a fetching valkyrie and, as a bonus, a barbarian too, to the delight of Conan comic readers.
Control runs smoothly on the joystick, and special actions are chosen through a well-working icon system. The icons cover all the basic actions, such as communication, object manipulation and game options. Combat is very simple: at a press of the fire button the hero either takes a swipe with a sword or uses a ranged weapon against the five basic monster types. The reward for a successful kill may be gold, food or magic items.
What sets Times of Lore apart from the normal action adventure is the chance (in fact the obligation) to talk with Albareth's other inhabitants. There's no need to torture the keyboard, as conversation is handled with a menu keyword list, but it's nevertheless almost up to Ultima level.
Technically the C-64 Times of Lore is really polished. The graphics are top-class right down to the animation (even the valkyrie's anatomical differences sway as she walks), and after the opening sequences the whole game sits in memory in one go, which should please owners of cassette decks. No mean feat, since the play area is 50x100 screens full of detailed graphics, and on top of the graphics the game has an extensive plot. The effects are on the flimsy side, but Galway's music makes up for this shortcoming.
Both the PC and the ST versions lose out to the C-64. The scrolling is stiff, and despite the better graphics capabilities there are hardly any significant differences. The versions are identical in other respects too.
Still, there's always something to complain about. One of the most important sides of a role-playing game, namely developing your character, has been completely forgotten, and the game has no real magic system. Even so, Times of Lore's good points weigh that much more heavily on the scales that such things can be overlooked. The main thing is that the game flows smoothly.
The Time of Legends is rather reminiscent of the late Amiga classic Faery Tale. But where Fairy Tale was dull and repetitive, Times of Lore is varied and manages to hold your interest right to the end. Luckily a sequel is already on the way.
