Wicked

Taistelukentällä on "portteja", joista leviää kasvustoja ympäristöön.

1989 SyksyHow nice to see Activision has found its roots. After its recent arcade conversions of varying quality came the nifty Millenium, and now here comes Wicked.

In Wicked you fight your way through the constellations of the zodiac as a little Good Sun, against the guardians of Evil. On the battlefield there are "gates" from which growths spread into the surroundings. The point of the growth is to cover the gates of Evil, and this is done by shooting the Evil growth, which turns red and at the same time becomes a breeding ground for Good. By day the gates of Good produce spores that grow into new gates, and by night the gates of Evil do the same. The growing is hampered by the guardian of Evil, which can only be shot during the day; at night the orc emulates Superman.

Harmful or helpful extras come from Tarot cards that appear in the middle of the level. Their effect apparently depends on whether Good or Evil is in the lead. You can't fritter away a whole eternity on one level, because if Evil isn't crushed within the time limit, a dense swarm of evil spores fills the entire screen.

The game itself looks quite nice, even if the sprites hardly give you a thrill with their looks or their animation. The all-seeing eye with its tears of blood at the start, on the other hand, is superb, as is the blood trickling down the screen when Game Over strikes. And after the blood a grave appears, its calm surface broken by a hand reaching up from under the ground.

The Amiga and ST versions are graphically identical, though the Amiga pulls ahead with its intensely atmospheric music. Wicked is a fine and original game whose worst fault is its sameness from one level to the next. Recommended all the same.
