Wanderer

1989 SyksyVihdoinkin, vihdoinkin jotain uutta! Lehdistä tuttua kolmiulotteisefektiä on käytetty pelissä!

Tärkeintähän on tietysti kolmiulotteisuusefekti. Pelin mukana tulee pahvilasit, joissa toinen linssi on sininen, toinen punainen. Ruudulla temmeltävät objektit on piirretty sinisellä vektorigrafiikalla ja pikkaisen eri kulmasta punaisella viivoituksella. Lopputuloksena on kolmiulotteisuus ilman kalliita erikoislaseja.

On meinaan silmät ristissä.

1989 SyksyAt last, at last something new! The three-dimensional effect familiar from magazines has been used in a game! Or rather, "at last" is putting it a bit strongly, since Wanderer is an oldish French game that Elite bought and changed.

Changed, if you can call it that. Compared with the old French version, Wanderer hasn't changed in any direction whatsoever. You still flit about in space, shoot things up and try to collect 8000 cats by playing space poker, so that you get to the epic final battle with the Sphinx.

The main thing, of course, is the 3-D effect. The game comes with cardboard glasses with one lens blue and the other red. The objects romping about the screen are drawn in blue vector graphics and, from a very slightly different angle, in red lines. The end result is three-dimensionality without expensive special glasses. And it even works, so much so that I'd love to see, say, Elite in glorious 3-D.

Unfortunately this effect turns out to be the most interesting thing Wanderer has to offer, since otherwise the game is a muddled and slow-paced shoot-em-up. As is only logical, the ST-Amiga vector graphics are fast and smooth, the C-64's considerably less fast and smooth.

In fact, the most fun part is tearing the glasses off your eyes after an hour-long Wanderer session and trying to readjust to the normal world. Your eyes end up well and truly crossed, let me tell you.
