Wizard Warz

Pelaaminen on yhtä jännittävää kuin Sound Of Musicin katselu ilman valoja. "Peli joka vie fantasiaroolipelin askeleen pitemmälle." Verrattuna mihin? Pac-Maniin?

1989 KevätAh, I remember back when I was a young lad, every brat in the village dreamed of becoming a master wizard. Only the dark side of the career ladder, namely battling the old top wizards, kept them as fresh apprentices to the village smith. Centuries have rolled by, wizardry has gone out of fashion, and apparently the only chance to reminisce about the old days is Wizard Warz.

The Wizards' War is divided into three parts which, despite their different objectives, are the same rubbish between different covers. In the first part you kill monsters, and the items they leave behind have to be returned to the right towns. In the second part you kill monsters to get the items required for the third round. In that one you nail seven other wizards and their sidekicks. There are some thirty different monsters, and the arsenal consists of a massive nine different spells. Of these you get to pick a hefty four.

The wizard moves around in a small circular section of the screen, which shows more or less of the surrounding terrain depending on the player's powers. Apart from water, the terrain has no effect on movement. When the wizard then eventually meets some monster, the fight moves to a separate arena, Archon style. And then the wizards whack each other with various spells. Apparently some spells work better on some monsters than others.

Wizard Warz is original at least in its execution, but what on earth is it trying to be? Playing it is as exciting as watching Sound Of Music in the dark. "A game that takes the fantasy role-playing game one step further." Compared to what? Pac-Man? I had already started to worry when Go! released a couple of good games, but now they're back on familiar ground.
