Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Thunderbirds

1989 Syksy5...4...3...2...1...Thunderbirds are go! Näin alkaa Gerry Andersonin aikoja sitten luoma Myrskylinnut. Näitä sarjoja ovat esimerkiksi Star Trek (mitä sitten odotitte?), The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Siinä olivat plussat, sitten miinuksiin: pelattavuus on olematon. Kyllähän ruudulla kieppuroivat sankarit tottelevat joystickkäden ohjeita ihan normaalisti, mutta aikaansaatavaa on erittäin vähän. Senkin vähän tekemiseksi joutuu touhuamaan kohtuuttomasti.

Inhoan myös pelin grafiikkaa. Tequella on inhottava tapa käyttää värejä.

1989 Syksy5...4...3...2...1...Thunderbirds are go! That's how Myrskylinnut, created by Gerry Anderson ages ago, begins. This TV series was shown to some extent in Finland too back in the day, but after that...zero. Nothing. Zippo. Until the English and the Americans dug a pile of old TV series out of the dust of the archives and put them up on a pedestal. These series include, for example, Star Trek (well, what did you expect?), The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (some episodes of which are apparently now available on video in Finland too) and Thunderbirds.

Myrskylinnut are actually the craft used by the TV series' main characters. Together, the characters of the game (and the series) make up an organisation called International Rescue, which runs on the funds of Jeff Tracy, a multimillionaire. IR will rush to help even on the other side of the globe if the situation demands it. In the game the player steers members of IR through danger situations in various parts of the world, one moment helping trapped coal miners, the next saving the whole world from the nuclear destruction threatening it.

The biggest flaw in the game is the bunch who programmed it: Teque. To this day I have seen only one game this gang hasn't managed to completely botch, and that's Blasteroids. To their credit it has to be said that the theme tune playing at the start is a really neat arrangement of the TV series' theme, and that the game has some nice digitised animations, even if they are hopelessly small and short. Those were the pluses; now on to the minuses: the playability is non-existent. Sure, the heroes twirling about on screen obey the joystick hand's commands perfectly normally, but there is very little to get done. And even to do that little you have to faff about unreasonably.

I also loathe the game's graphics. Teque has a loathsome way of using colours. The Amiga Thunderbirds looks as if the machine's palette had only 8 colours, but still 16 colours. If that sounds confusing, so is the end result. The player also needs language skills, as wading through the manual (English) is all but compulsory. You can learn the necessary things the hard way too, but I rather suspect boredom will strike before learning does. To top it all off, the difficulty levels are totally up the... The first mission is too hard, and the next mission is then much easier again, and so on.

For friends of Teque, action adventures and the TV series, Thunderbirds may be a game worth getting, but anyone looking for a quality game would do well to give TB a rather wide berth.
