Starfox

1988"Eat plutonium death, you disgusting alien weirdos!", karjuin, kiepsautin Tähtiketun ylösalaisin ja annoin tähtäimessä näkyvälle alukselle viimeisen voitelun koukistamalla liipaisinsormeani. "No, viisas antaa vähästäänkin", ajattelin...

Kaikkihan toki muistavat vielä Skyfoxin ja Arcticfoxin. Starfox on olevinaan niille jatkoa. Järkyttävin perusmoka Starfoxissa on reagointi joystickin liikkeisiin.

1988"Eat plutonium death, you disgusting alien weirdos!" I roared, flipped the Starfox upside down and gave the ship in my sights its last rites by crooking my trigger finger. With a small movement I found the next enemy in my field of view and got ready to sow death its way as well. A glance towards the energy banks confirmed my assumption that the weapons were running low on energy. "Well, the wise give even from the little they have," I thought...

Surely everyone still remembers Skyfox and Arcticfox. Starfox fancies itself a sequel to them. The only difference is that Starfox was programmed by some German bloke, and not by the American Electronic Arts. And it shows. The most appalling basic blunder in Starfox is the way it responds to joystick movements. When you push the joystick forward, you naturally expect the ship to dive downwards. Like fox it does! Against all reason Starfox wobbles upwards, and there's no way you ever get used to these reversed controls.

The game is set in the Hyturia solar system, which is protected by the Rubicon, a kind of force field. The peaceful coexistence is interrupted by a message that the Rubicon has been breached and that a ninth planet has invaded the solar system. You are given the task of destroying the intruders. The game is crammed full of all sorts of functions, from switching weapon systems to a three-dimensional map. Still, you can make sense of the jumble by immersing yourself in the instructions.

The graphics are ugly and the sprites are extremely poor. The music passes muster, but the sound effects are wretched. Trying out the various functions holds your interest for a while, but the mindless shooting just can't sustain it. A Starfox II is reportedly on the way too; hopefully it will be better.
