Six-Gun ShootOut
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Tuskin...
Vaikka väite saattaakin kuulostaa epäilyttävältä, on SSI onnistunut kaappaamaan peliinsä lännen kiivaiden taistojen sykkeen, vaikkakin hieman hitaammassa muodossa strategiapelin vuorojärjestelmässä.
Tavallisuudesta poikkeavasti pelisysteemiä on hieman muutettu.
Pelaaminen on homman tajuttuaan melko helppoa.
Kaiken kaikkiaan upea peli, jonka parissa tulee vietettyä monituisia tunteja. Pelaaminen on melko nopeaa, eikä kone mieti kauaakaan siirtojaan kuten monissa muissa peleissä. Ja ennenkaikkea - Six-Gun Shootout on todella helppo oppia. Sopii jopa viheliäisimmälle aloittelijalle siinä kuin vanhalle konkarillekin.
1989 SyksyGames have been made about many subjects, not least the Wild West. But has anyone other than SSI made a strategy game on the subject? Hardly. And would anyone else have pulled it off as well as SSI? Hardly...
Although the claim may sound dubious, SSI has managed to capture in its game the pulse of the West's fierce gunfights, albeit in a somewhat slower form, within a strategy game's turn system.
Unusually, the game system has been changed a little. It isn't divided, as is customary, into movement turns for each side; instead the characters are moved more or less in turn, depending on each character's own attributes. If a character is quick and nimble on their feet, you can move them more often than some slow lump. Wounds also have a considerable effect. Naturally, if one of your legs has been shot to a pulp, getting around doesn't go all that well.
The game's various scenarios include famous scenes from various films and from history. Among the films that made it in are The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Rio Bravo and El Siette Magnifico, while from history there are, for example, the downfall of the Daltons, Jesse James's attempted bank robbery and the siege of Billy The Kid. Typical historical scenes, on the other hand, are the Indian attack on a settlers' wagon train and the bandits' raid on a town. In all, you can test your skills in ten different scenarios.
Once you've got the hang of it, playing is fairly easy. All you have to do is move the guys around and shoot. What makes it harder is the different stances. Whether to stand, kneel or lie on the ground - each stance has its advantages and drawbacks, but generally speaking the lower you are, the harder you are to hit. Choice of weapon is a problem too: with a pistol you couldn't hit a barn from 10 paces, but a rifle has to be reloaded after every shot. Is it worth going up close to have a poke with a knife, or do you try to hit a target smaller than a barn? And most important of all: is your current position a good one, or would it be wiser to move to a new firing position?
There isn't much to say about the graphics. Walls, stone walls, bushes, chairs and tables + the characters and nothing else. Everything done fairly simply, the style suiting the game well. There are no sounds apart from the sound of the gunshots (unusually good), a beep that signals a hit and a rattle you hear when moving.
All in all, a superb game that you'll end up spending many an hour with. The instructions are excellent, but this time perhaps even needlessly detailed for this game. Play is fairly quick, and the computer doesn't ponder its moves for long, as it does in many other games. And above all - Six-Gun Shootout is really easy to learn. It suits even the most hopeless beginner just as well as the old hand.
