Star Command

Yksi hengissä selviämisen edellytyksistä on nimittäin oikeiden varusteiden valitseminen.

Esimerkiksi pelaajaa vastaan ensimmäiseksi tulevien avaruuspiraattien valiojoukkoihin on pelin alkuvaiheessa hankittavilla aseilla lähes mahdotonta osua. Toisaalta seuraavaksi eteen ilmestyvien insektoidien partioalusten miehistö on naurettavan helppo tuhota lähitaistelussa.

1989 KevätSSI, best known for its strategy and fantasy role-playing games, has decided to get into the science fiction role-playing market too. Not that Star Command differs all that remarkably from ordinary fantasy games; its frame of reference is just a bit different, that's all. On top of that, they've also thrown in some shooting between spaceships.

The idea of Star Command is a classic one: humanity is settling a region known as "the Triangle", which, as the game begins, is under attack from space crooks and insectoids alike. Because of the space fleet's poor finances, new recruits can be given only a little starting capital with which to equip a small eight-person ship. With this ship you're then supposed to clean up the galaxy and, on the side, earn enough money to buy bigger ships and more powerful weapons for both the ship and the crew.

In terms of its tables and its universe, Star Command is the absolute top of the field. For one of the prerequisites of staying alive is choosing the right equipment. But how do you choose even the right weapon out of more than 50 tabulated options, all of which fall into different categories not only in the training they require but also in firepower, rate of fire, magazine size, weight, range, damage, ammunition weight, ammunition price, accuracy, price and area of destruction? Other tabulated equipment includes armour, ship shields, ship defence systems, spaceships, ship weapon systems, guidance countermeasure systems, hand weapons, targeting systems and "other junk".

The game's problems are the quirks of the menu system it uses, such as the fact that when you sell personal items, every item belonging to the whole party is printed on screen. Likewise the ship's crew are treated as near-total idiots. I mean, what kind of space warrior doesn't swap an empty magazine for a new one between boarding battles, or lugs the toolkit needed to repair his ship around with him on the planet's surface?

The game also has some surprising balancing. For example, the elite troops of the space pirates, the first enemies the player comes up against, are almost impossible to hit with the weapons you can get hold of in the early stages of the game. On the other hand, the crews of the insectoid patrol ships that turn up next are ridiculously easy to wipe out in close combat.

Despite everything said above, the game is by no means bad. There's humour in it too. What do you say to a secret passage with a gaming machine placed in front of it, which will readily tell the players why it's there, if only they have the wits to ask? The problem-solving methods are realistic too. You see, the handiest way past said gaming machine is to shove the barrel of your laser into the coin slot and pull the trigger.

SSI also deserves special thanks for shipping the PC version on both 5.25 and 3.5 inch disks. Backing up works too, as the copy protection is based on questions asked when you save the game, which need the manual to answer.
