B 24
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988Mitäs tämä on olevinaan? SSI tekee simulaattorin? Strategiafirma siirtyy simulaattoripuolelle.
Eihän se ole noin yksinkertaista. Tavallista simua odottaneet kokevat karvaan pettymyksen ladatessaan B-24:n.
Toteutus on paljolti vanhan ikivihreän 50 Mission Crushin tyyppinen. Tosin paljon kehittyneempi. Lyhyt tehtävänkuvaus voisi olla seuraavanlainen: lentoonlähtö, nousu 2000-3000 jalan välille odottamaan laivueen kokoontumista, lennetään saattohävittäjien tapaamispaikalle, noustaan pommituskorkeuteen ja lennetään kohteelle, pudotetaan pommit ja palataan kotiin.
Pelistä on koetettu tehdä mahdollisimman realistinen. Vaikka toteutus on hieman hämääkin (kone nähdään ylhäältäpäin), on siinä onnistuttu hyvin.
Pelialue on koostettu ruuduista, joiden läpimitta on 10 mailia; yksi kerrallaan on näkyvissä ruudulla.
Pientä huomautettavaa toteutuksessa kuitenkin on.
1988And what is this supposed to be? SSI making a simulator? A strategy company crossing over to the simulator side.
Well, it's not as simple as that. Anyone expecting an ordinary sim is in for a bitter disappointment when they load up B-24. Once again SSI has turned out a strategy game worth taking seriously, one that doesn't demand as much studying as usual.
The player gets the controls of a B-24 Liberator bomber in their calloused hands and gets to lead bombing raids against Ploesti in Romania, Nazi Germany's most important oil producer. And the job isn't easy - the 19 dangerous missions, spent being knocked about by flak, fighters and engine damage, make sure of that.
The execution is very much of the same type as the old evergreen 50 Mission Crush. Much more advanced, though. A brief mission description might go like this: take off, climb to 2000-3000 feet to wait for the squadron to form up, fly to the rendezvous with the escort fighters, climb to bombing altitude and fly to the target, drop the bombs and head home.
An effort has been made to make the game as realistic as possible. Although the presentation is a little deceptive (the plane is seen from above), it has been pulled off well. Flying the plane is done with the stick, while the other actions are on the keyboard. The game runs in real time, but it can be sped up as much as 60 times, which will cheer players up especially on the dull cruise legs to the targets.
The play area is made up of squares 10 miles across; one at a time is visible on the screen. This occasionally causes a bit of a headache when the plane has to stay within the square and the neighbouring square is mountains, which the plane crashes into after straying out of its square. On the other hand, the grid is an excellent way to navigate and to meet up with the escort fighters, a whole different thing from navigating by radio beacons.
The game's look is nothing special, nor does it depart from the general strategy game standard, and neither does the sound, though there isn't anything more to it than the roar of the engines, flak and air combat.
There is one small complaint about the execution, however. At normal speed the plane moves one notch at a time. When you speed the game up it jumps several notches, and at 60 times it only shows up on the screen a couple of times, meaning the plane jumps half the screen at a time. Smooth movement would have been more pleasant.
There's not much to slate in B-24. Then again, I personally couldn't get very excited about it either. The game is by no means bad, quite the opposite, but maybe it just isn't for me. The partial stick control may appeal to younger players too, although the many keyboard functions are an obstacle in turn. In any case, B-24 is worth playing, and challenging.
