Risk
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Hyvä välitavoite on saada vapautettua mantere pari ennen muita pelaajia. Tällöin saadaan niinsanottu manterebonus eli ylimääräisiä armeijoita. Jokaisella kierroksella saatavien armeijoiden lukumäärää voidaan kasvattaa myös vapauttamalla lisää alueita: jokaisesta kolmesta maasta yksi uusi armeija. Ja mitä enemmän armeijoita, sitä vahvempi asema.
Oman mielenkiintoisen lisäbonuksen peliin tuovat kortit. Jos vapautat kierroksella maan, saat kortin. Kun sinulla on kolme samanlaista/erilaista korttia saat bonusyksiköitä, 4:stä jopa 250:een asti. Tällöin ei toisilla ole paljoa sanomista.
Erilaisia pelivaihtoehtoja on paljon. Menussa voit määrätä mm. nopan sivujen lukumäärän (2-9), joka ratkaisee melko paljon taisteluissa. Voit valita montako bonusyksikköä saat korteilla (0-250), ja mikä parasta: 2-5 pelaajaa. Mahdollista on käyttää valmiita skenaariovalintoja, joissa automaattisesti annetaan kullekin pelaajalle taso ja aloitusmaat (esim: Darkness - viisi pelaajaa, neljällä yksi aloitusmaa, yhdellä 38).
Risk on peli, jossa strategia ratkaisee paljon. Suositeltava hankinta.
1989 SyksySometimes a person gets lucky, and this is one of those times. I found Risk, a superb board game that has come out on the Amiga very much on the quiet.
In Risk you operate on a global scale. The main task is to wipe the other players off the map, but it can be done more subtly too. If you pick the mission option from the menu, you may have to 'liberate' one/several particular continents from the other players' hands. Sometimes you may be given the task of bumping off one particular player, or otherwise just eliminating all the other players from the world map.
As in the original it is modelled on, the implementation in the computer version is simple and functional. You just pick the 'liberate' option and start liberating countries from under the others' yoke. At the start you have three armies, one of which always stays behind to hold the liberated country. However, if the dice aren't kind, it can also happen that more armies get used up liberating a country, and they may even be sent back with bloody noses.
A good intermediate goal is to get a continent or two liberated before the other players. That earns you the so-called continent bonus, i.e. extra armies. The number of armies you receive each round can also be increased by liberating more territories: one new army for every three countries. And the more armies, the stronger your position.
The cards bring an interesting extra bonus of their own to the game. If you liberate a country during a round, you get a card. When you have three matching/different cards you get bonus units, anything from 4 all the way up to 250. At that point the others don't have much say in the matter.
There are plenty of different game options. In the menu you can set, among other things, the number of sides on the dice (2-9), which decides quite a lot in battles. You can choose how many bonus units the cards give you (0-250), and best of all: 2-5 players. You can also use ready-made scenario choices, in which each player is automatically given a level and starting countries (e.g.: Darkness - five players, four with one starting country each, one with 38).
Risk is a game in which strategy decides a great deal. Luck (=the dice) is just as important, but the right tactics usually settle it. It has an atmosphere all its own that pulls you back in again and again, even if an hour earlier you'd already had your fill of it. A recommended purchase.
