Rock'n Roll

1990 KevätThe game's misleading name refers quite literally to rolling and not at all to rock music. For in Rock'n Roll you steer the pet character of offbeat games, the rolling ball. Mind you, you can no longer really talk about originality, since this loose branch of the game family is getting crowded too: Marble Madness, Spindizzy, Quedex, Red Led, Incredible Shrinking Sphere and so on.

In RR you roll the ball to the goal, but the journey turns out to be downright winding. Obstacles and hindrances include locked gates, one-way lanes, breakable floors, acid pools, ice fields, fans, Quedex-style pipes and whatnot. If that wasn't enough, the mazes also hold supplies to collect, such as keys and money, with which you can get an armoured ball, snow chains and other useful stuff. By collecting eyes you can piece together a map of the play area, which is just as well, since the area is vast and using the teleports scrambles your sense of direction.

RR has ideas by the basketful, but nearly all of them have been nicked from other people's games. So what, when the result is a product this polished. The little ball obeys the mouse control without a murmur and the scrolling follows along smoothly. The pleasantly clear and crisply defined graphics have been given some extra eye candy by scrolling the lower level, visible through the holes, at a different speed.

The twistiness of the levels is just the thing to keep your interest alive, but there's one bad blunder in the design. With 32 large levels in the game, using passwords would have been a kind gesture towards the player. The instructions offer a little comfort, since according to them the game is supposed to have shortcuts. Another irritating feature is the perkily rocking background music, which you can't stand without screaming, but then again nobody's forcing you to listen to it.

Maybe ball-rolling is starting to be a subject that's been drained dry, but even so RR is a risk-free investment for fans of skill games.
