Realm of The Trolls

Lode Runnerin idea on Realm of Trollsissa naamioitu kauniin grafiikan, skrollaavan kuvaruudun, muutaman lisäominaisuuden ja hassun haltijakertomuksen taakse. Ideana on päästä peli läpi kenttä kerrallaan keräämällä kaikki kentässä olevat tavarat ja pois tumalla sitten auenneesta ovesta.

Kertomuksen mukaan peli sijoittuu kivikauden aikoihin, jolloin maailmaa hallitsivat pahat peikot ja hyvät keijukaiset. Kerran peikot tekivät ryöstöretken keijujen maailmaan ja varastivat kaiken minkä irti saivat. Keijukaiset yrittivät yksi toisensa jälkeen varastaa takaisin tavaroitaan epäonnistuen surkeasti. Vain kartta peikkojen luolista saatiin saaliiksi. Mistä arvasitte: pelaaja on yksi noista keijuista ja tehtävänä on yrittää saada takaisin sukukalleudet.

Peikot vartioivat tarkasti varastamiaan aarteita. Jos he saavat tunkeilijan kiinni, alkaa kamala mätkiminen ja keijulta vähenee energiaa. Onneksi keijujen poppamies on antanut kullekin kandidaatille taikavoimaa.

Onneksi ROT:ssä on sisäänrakennettu kenttäeditori, jolla pelaajat voivat suunnitella toisilleen ikäviä pulmia.

Realm of Trollsin grafiikka on erittäin viimeisteltyä ja tunnelmaan sopivaa. Myös ääniefektit ja alkumusiikki ovat taidokkaasti valitut. Pelaaminen on erittäin helppoa ja nautittavaa johtuen taidokkaista vieritys- ja tikunlukurutiineista. Ainoana miinuksena on mainittava pieni epätarkkuus levyn lukemisessa. Jos save-levy on hajonnut, ohjelma tilttaa ja pyytää boottaamaan koko roskan uudelleen. Tästä huolimatta Realm of Trolls kerää pisteet ja mielenkiinto pelaamiseen säilyy varmasti pitkälle tulevaisuuteen.

1989 SyksyWho still remembers an old game called Lode Runner? It first came out back when Adam was a boy, for the VIC-20 and the C-64. Now the old idea has been warmed up again, and once more we get to curse the sleepless nights spent over it.

In Realm of Trolls the Lode Runner idea has been disguised behind pretty graphics, a scrolling screen, a few extra features and a funny fairy-folk tale. The idea is to get through the game one level at a time by collecting all the items on the level and then getting out through the door that has opened.

According to the story, the game is set in the Stone Age, when the world was ruled by evil trolls and good fairies. Once upon a time the trolls went on a raid into the fairies' world and stole everything that wasn't nailed down. One after another the fairies tried to steal their belongings back, failing miserably. The only loot brought home was a map of the trolls' caves. How did you guess: the player is one of those fairies, and the task is to try to get the family heirlooms back.

The trolls keep a close guard on the treasures they have stolen. If they catch an intruder, a terrible walloping begins and the fairy loses energy. Fortunately the fairies' witch doctor has given each candidate magic powers. With magic the fairy can eat away a piece of the ground beside it or shoot freezing arrows that make the trolls go stiff for a moment.

The trolls' caves consist of platforms and ladders. So the fairy can eat a hole in a platform and drop down through it. The caves also have teleports and wizards who pop up here and there. The wizards can restore the fairy's energy if it is close enough. Further torments come in the form of falling rocks, water, fireballs, lifts and rolling mine trains.

The game as it stands would no doubt be pretty dull.

Fortunately ROT has a built-in level editor with which players can design nasty puzzles for each other. The editor on its own is extremely versatile, since the player can change every single thing: the trolls' movements, the routes of the lifts, the appearance of the wizards and so on. When you add to this versatile disk options, game saving, the chance to practise a level and playing against a friend, you get a downright delightful gaming experience.

The graphics of Realm of Trolls are highly polished and suit the atmosphere. The sound effects and the title music are skilfully chosen too. Playing is very easy and enjoyable thanks to the skilful scrolling and joystick-reading routines. The only minus that has to be mentioned is a slight sloppiness in the disk reading. If the save disk is broken, the program crashes and asks you to reboot the whole lot. Despite this, Realm of Trolls scores the points, and interest in playing it will surely last far into the future.
