Prison

1989 SyksyUuden pelifirman ensituotteet ovat aina kiinnsotavia. Miten menestynee Chrysalis vain 16-bittisille tarkoitetussa Prisonissaan?

Tarinan sankari Jag, jonka housuihin pelaaja asettuu, edustaa tulevaisuuden epätoivoisia lainvartijoita. Esimiehiltään saamiaan toimintaohjeita noudattaen Jag järjestää verilöylyn kellarileipomossa, jossa huumeliiga tiettävästi harjoittaa tuottoisaa liiketoimintaa veroviranomaisten tavoittanmattomissa. Ruumiinlaskentaa suoritettaessa paljastuu jauhoinen totuus, kylmäkallet olivatkin aivan tavallisia taikinanpyörittäjiä! Jag ei näe toimissaan mitään eettisesti arveluttavaa ja vannoo viattomuudestaan vakuuttuneena kostoa matkallaan Altraxin vankilasiirtokuntaan.

Pelaajan tulee kuljettaa Jagia pitkin ja poikin Altraxia siinä toivossa, että onnistuisi löytämään planeetalle pudonneen pakoaluksen kappaleet, joita kanta-asukkaat niinikään halajavat.

Kaupungin kartoitusta vaikeuttavat paitsi vihamieliset alkuasukkaat myös erilaiset kaduille ripotellut räjähteet ja maankuoren repeämät. Erikoinen piirre pelissä on vuorokaudenaikojen vaihtelua noudattava valaistuksen muuttuminen.

Prison tarjoaa pitkin matkaa pelaajan pureskeltavaksi pikku pähkinöitä, joiden ratkaiseminen on edellytys pelin etenemiselle.

1989 SyksyThe debut products of a new games company are always interesting. How might Chrysalis fare with Prison, which is intended for 16-bit machines only?

The hero of the story, Jag, into whose trousers the player steps, represents the desperate lawmen of the future. Following the instructions he has received from his superiors, Jag stages a bloodbath in a basement bakery where a drug ring is reportedly running a lucrative business out of the tax authorities' reach. When the bodies are counted, the floury truth comes out: the cold-blooded hard men were in fact perfectly ordinary dough-rollers! Jag sees nothing ethically questionable in his actions and, convinced of his innocence, swears revenge on his way to the prison colony of Altrax.

The player has to steer Jag the length and breadth of Altrax in the hope of finding the pieces of an escape ship that has crashed on the planet, pieces which the natives likewise hanker after.

Mapping the town is made harder not only by the hostile natives but also by assorted explosives sprinkled about the streets and by rifts in the planet's crust. A peculiar feature of the game is the lighting, which changes with the time of day. Moving about at night is rather dangerous, because the streets swarm with shady characters, and even finding safe footing is agony in the dark.

The action-game elements in Prison are represented by frantic hand-to-hand brawls with the gangsters who rule Altrax, maze-wandering among traps and gathering useful items along the way. The last of these, like mapping the explored area, is also an essential part of the nature of adventure games.

All along the way, Prison serves up little nuts for the player to chew on, and cracking them is a prerequisite for making progress in the game. Unlike traditional adventure games, Prison only lets you pick one of a handful of ready-made options from a menu when you hit a puzzle. The problem may simply be choosing between the red and the blue wire when defusing a bomb. A more complicated situation arises when trading, for example, where every choice spawns more alternative courses of action.

Prison requires a reasonable knack for wiggling the joystick, but no lightning-fast reflexes are called for. Powers of observation and inventiveness are needed in greater supply, since without them the game goes nowhere. The right flash of insight usually comes down to choosing the appropriate object in various puzzle situations.

Since there is a lot of unknown territory to trek across in the game, danger can't be avoided altogether either. The pallid Grim Reaper scoops the player into his palm more than once. This doesn't turn into a problem, however, as Prison has an excellent save-game option. The player can play tactically and make daredevil choices in unfamiliar surroundings. If you do lose your life, the lesson hasn't come too dear, since you can start the game again from the point you saved.

Prison is a rare game in that you get through it relatively smoothly and, once you reach the end, you're pleased with what you've achieved. Feeling good about it, you can give it away to a pal as a present, since it has done its job.
