Populous
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1989 SyksyPientä ihmistä kiusaavat tulivuoret, tulvat ja maanjäristykset. Kuka niiden takana on?
Tavoite Populousissa on yksinkertainen: vastustajan palvojien täydellinen eliminoiminen.
Jumalan pääasiallinen työväline on manna. Mannaa kerätään vaalimalla omia palvojia, jotta nämä pikkuiset lisääntyisivät ja täyttäisivät maan. Maanpinnan sopivuudesta riippuen pien'ihmiset rakentelevat vaihtelevan vahvuisia majoja, aina teltoista linnoituksiin.
Miinuksena Amigassa on tuttu grafiikan tahmainen käsittely.
1989 SyksyVolcanoes, floods and earthquakes torment the little man. Who's behind them? Me, that's who - god - and there are more deadly surprises still to come. Best of all: I'm the "good" god. Playing God has always been mankind's favourite hobby, and now Bulldog has made a game of it!
The goal in Populous is simple: the total elimination of your opponent's worshippers. God cannot influence the people directly, only at most issue broad orders about the movements of the masses (settle, join and settle, fight and settle, go to the place of worship). Variety comes from the different terrain types, which affect survival and reproduction.
God's main tool is manna. Manna is collected by tending your own worshippers so that these little ones will multiply and fill the earth. Depending on how suitable the ground is, the little people build dwellings of varying strength, anything from tents to castles. Once they've put up a building, the people withdraw behind its walls to multiply. The stronger the building, the stronger the offspring. The more offspring and the stronger they are, the more manna.
But what, then, do you do with all this manna? With manna you can reshape the land, you can use it to move your centre of worship, but above all you can use it to make life hell for your opponent's heathens. Earthquakes that leave ruins, deadly swamps, house-burning, people-murdering knights, destructive volcanoes, drowning floods and Armageddon! Ah, isn't it great to be god?
Populous's graphics suit the game like a hymn suits a church; after a few hours' play you can't imagine them any other way. Populous offers no exceptional animation, but in spite of that those little pitter-patterers no longer register as heaps of pixels, they are my Children, whose development I must nurture. Playing goes comfortably and clearly with the mouse, and once you've learned the basic concepts you no longer need the manual.
The ST and Amiga versions are practically identical. On top of the digitised effects common to both machines, the Amiga has a heartbeat that speeds up when things are going badly, and a simple but fitting musical backing. On the minus side, the Amiga has the familiar sticky handling of the graphics.
The game is repetitive, but - wonder of wonders - you just can't get bored of it. In Custom mode you get to adjust 60 factors affecting the game and edit the world the battle is fought over, and playing over the link cable is pure manna!
There's nothing left to say except that Populous is a brilliant game and a classic from the moment of its birth. More of this sort of thing!
