Overrun

1989 SyksySSI:n suursota jatkuu.

Overrunissa mielenkiintoisin piirre on pikkutarkka, äärimmilleen viety realismi.

1989 SyksySSI's great war rages on. First came Typhoon of Steel, packed with the great battles of the Second World War, and now Overrun has appeared, dealing with modern warfare in Europe and the Middle East.

Overrun's battlefields are spread around the world. The European battles are a Third World War fought between NATO and the Warsaw Pact; in the Middle East, Israel and the Arab states fight it out, as do Iran and the US Army in two conflicts. There's also the option to build your own battles, which is always a big plus in games like this. Overrun and TOS in particular benefit from the construction option, since smaller home-made battles run faster than the original giant clashes and are easier to manage.

The most interesting feature of Overrun is its meticulous realism, taken to the extreme. It shows in everything. Weapon systems of all kinds are featured to the tune of 480 weapons. At your disposal are all the weapons currently in use (except nuclear & chemical weapons) and a few that are still being developed, such as the T-94 tank. The use of helicopters adds a dimension of its own on top.

In the game itself, everything goes quickly in the orders phase despite the large number of different commands. But then comes the action phase... Gary Grigsby has made a superb and realistic game system which, for me at least, simply kills all enthusiasm with its truly horrendous slowness.

There's nothing else to complain about in Overrun, since the graphics work and the manual is excellent. You do, however, have to be a dyed-in-the-wool strategy freak if you're going to start playing Overrun seriously.
