Operation Neptune

Tihutöiden suorittamiseen on aina useampia vaihtoehtoja.

1989 SyksyThe world beneath the surface doesn't seem to be a familiar element to game programmers. It has been left more or less in peace while computer games have concentrated on more terrestrial matters. The only underwater visions to have won any fame have been various submarine simulations, which have usually viewed things from a Second World War periscope perspective. Other game types, with a few rare exceptions, have been content to leave this element to the fish. Now France's Infogrames ventures into uncharted waters with the action and strategy game Operation Neptune.

At the centre of all the action is the small attack submarine Bathyscape C5, but even so the game makes no attempt whatsoever at simulating underwater reality. Steering the submarine causes no agony, and the gauges you're obliged to keep an eye on have been kept to a minimum of two. From the control panel you select different types of game sequence rather than technical functions vital to an underwater vessel.

The object of the game is to destroy the enemy's bases and the power lines connecting them. Demolition work also comes up when defending your own bases against enemy attacks. There are always several ways to go about the dirty work. Besides the submarine, you can use an underwater scooter or venture out in nothing but a wetsuit with a harpoon as your only weapon. The submarine and the scooter are fitted with hefty guns plus laser cannons. The most important tools for destroying the enemy, however, are time bombs, of which there is a limited supply.

Operation Neptune is a fine brew of shoot-'em-up, action game and strategy. There are enough different gameplay elements, and the execution represents solid French know-how. The graphics are lovely to look at and the sound effects back up the action in a fitting way. If you use these criteria to express the standard of a computer game, you can only conclude that OperatiMiPy'äyrääqqsty0äusäältuolelle.

Infogrames mostly manages to meet the outward requirements of a good computer game. Captain Blood was even Europe's number one game in its day. On the other hand, in the name of fairness it must be said that I don't know a single computer gamer with the stamina to keep playing this software house's products for long. Some essential ingredient to do with playability is always missing from Infogrames' brews. Once it's found, we can expect some truly top-notch games. Operation Neptune, sadly, is not one of them.
