Mech Brigade

1989 SyksyTervetuloa painajaisten maailmaan.

Strategiapeliksi Mech Brigade on harvinaisen nopeatempoinen eli yhdestä taistosta selviää parissa tunnissa.

1989 SyksyWelcome to the world of nightmares. Or what else could you call the outbreak of the third world conflagration? Instead of re-untangling the dusty battles of history, this time SSI serves up the joys of modern warfare for our delectation, complete with attack helicopters and anti-tank missiles. Only nuclear and chemical weapons are missing. A pity, for what could have been more fun than flattening the entire opposing side in one go, and whittling down your own side along the way a little more slowly with radiation.

The player commands a brigade-sized armoured unit on the German battlefield in the Third World War. In typical SSI style, the characteristics of the various weapon systems are just what they should be, and great weight has been placed on the game's realism.

The program's original year of completion (1985) does, however, shine through in more than one place. First of all, the game's user interface is regrettably clumsy: getting a picture of the battle situation as a whole takes a good deal of wandering criss-cross over the map and peering at units. Moving formations and giving them orders is also stiff, since even finding out a unit's name requires giving a separate command, without moving the cursor to the right spot activating the unit automatically, as is normal these days. Also missing is the highlighting of units belonging to the same formation, familiar from some of SSI's later games.

On the other hand, 1985 was still the era when strategy gamers were a closed clique of their own, which demanded of manuals, f'rinstance, highly detailed information on the thickness of tanks' frontal armour, but who read Yank army abbreviations just like your average APC/MICV driver. So the manual may be quite a tough morsel for someone who doesn't know the basics of the various weapon systems - for the more experienced strategist, of course, quite a tasty morsel, even if it goes over the same things as many other SSI manuals.

For a strategy game Mech Brigade is unusually fast-paced: you can get through one battle in a couple of hours. In a game this quick there can be no talk of any very subtle strategy, but sadly few of those who claim to be strategy gamers even miss such a thing.
