Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. 1989 SyksyRiemulleni ei ollut rajoja kun sain pitkän odottelun jälkeen suuren ennakkokohun myötä markkinoille tulleen Kristalin käsiini. Neljä levykettä täynnä seikkailuja ja uusia maailmoja! Kristalin muuten piti ensin olla musikaali, mutta kun projektista ei tullut mitään, tehtiin Kristalista peli.
Vielä pari levykkeellistä vievien alkukuvien ja digitoitujen puheiden jälkeen olin ratketa kärsimättömästä odotuksesta. Sitten alkoi itse peli! Ja voi sitä pettymyksen määrää. No eihän Kristal huono ole, onpahan vain harvinaisen tavanomainen.
Kristal on käytännössä toimintaseikkailu, jossa päähahmo haahuilee pitkin yhden aurinkokunnan tärkeimpiä planeettoja. Hän voi yrittää päästä juttuun myös paikallisten asukkaiden kanssa, tai sitten hän joutuu syöttämään heille puoli metriä kylmää terästä navan kautta. Jotkut vastaantulevista naisihmisistä ymmärtävät myös hävyttömien ehdotusten päälle ja antavat kysyjälle mitä kuuluu - ja kuka käskee... Parseri on kuitenkin huono ynnä yksinkertainen eikä juttu tahdo luistaa ilman tismalleen oikeita kysymyksiä. Kielitaidottomat älkööt siis vaivautuko.
Miekkataistelut ovat kuitenkin valitettavan yksinkertaisia, paitsi jos niitä vertaa avaruustaisteluihin, jotka ovat suurin piirtein C 64:n 3D Galaxianin luokkaa eikä tämä ole kehu. Peliin on yritetty ympätä myös huumoria. Pelihahmon avaruusaluksen virkaa toimittaa nimittäin 1700-luvun merirosvokaljuuna, jonka tykeillä ammuskellaan avaruudessa vastaan tulevia jättiläishyönteisiä.
Yhden levyaseman omistajat kiertäköön myös Kristalin kaukaa, sillä neljän levykkeen vaatima vaihtoruljanssi on kaikkea muuta kuin hauskaa puuhaa. Kahden aseman omistajat tuhlatkoon pennosensa ennemmin vaikka War in the Middle Earthiin. On nimittäin aivan eri luokkaa kuin tämä viritys, vaikka onkin myönnettävä, että toimintaseikkailun ystäville Kristal on nannaa.
1989 SyksyMy joy knew no bounds when, after a long wait, I got my hands on Kristal, which hit the market amid a great deal of advance hype. Four disks full of adventures and new worlds! Kristal, by the way, was first supposed to be a musical, but when nothing came of the project, Kristal was made into a game.
After intro pictures and digitised speech taking up another couple of disks' worth, I was about to burst at the seams with impatient anticipation. Then the game itself began! And oh, the sheer amount of disappointment. Well, Kristal isn't bad, it's just remarkably ordinary.
Kristal is in practice an action adventure in which the main character wanders about the most important planets of one solar system. The hero can also try to strike up a conversation with the local inhabitants, or else ends up having to feed them half a metre of cold steel through the navel. Some of the womenfolk you run into also get the drift of indecent proposals and give the asker what's coming - and whose fault is that... The parser, however, is poor plus simplistic, and the conversation won't really flow without exactly the right questions. So let those without language skills not bother.
The sword fights, however, are regrettably simple, except when compared with the space battles, which are roughly in the class of the C 64's 3D Galaxian, and that is no compliment. Someone has also tried to cram some humour into the game. The role of the character's spaceship is played, you see, by an 18th-century pirate galleon, whose cannons are used to blast away at the giant insects met in space.
Let owners of a single disk drive also give Kristal a wide berth, since the swapping rigmarole demanded by four disks is anything but fun. Let owners of two drives rather squander their pennies on, say, War in the Middle Earth. It is in a whole different league from this contraption, although it has to be admitted that for fans of action adventure Kristal is yum-yum.
