Echelon
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1989 SyksyEchelon on koodinimi huippusalaiselle armeijan tukikohdalle, joka on sijoitettu Isikselle, aurinkokuntamme kymmenennelle planeetalle. Echelonia ylläpitää Kansainvälinen Avaruusfederaatio, jonka elämäntehtävä on estää avaruusmerirosvoilu. Sattumalta Federaatio tietää, että rosvojen päätukikohta on Isiksellä, joten eipä muuta kuin C-104 Tomahawkin moottorit käyntiin ja piraattijahtiin.
Perimmäinen tarkoitus on tietysti löytää avaruusrosmojen kätketty tukikohta. Se löytyy lentelemällä pitkin Isiksen pintaa ja etsimällä esineitä ja johtolankoja, joista piraattien inhan lymypaikan koordinaatit pikkuhiljaa selviävät.
C-104 Tomahawk on teknofiilin toiveuni. Alus on varustettu niin tietokoneella, kauko-ohjattavalla droidilla, teleportterilla kuin neljällä eri asejärjestelmälläkin. Maisemaa voi vapaasti zoomailla ja näkyvät aukenevat joka suuntaan. Luonnollisesti näppäimistö on raskaassa käytössä, joten on selvää, ettei Echelonia ilman ohjekirjan ja kielitaidon symbioosia pahemmin pelailla.
Grafiikka on varsin yksinkertaista vektorigrafiikkaa, ja kuusnelosen ollessa kyseessä, tuskastuttavan hidasta. Muuten aluksen kontrollit ovat miellyttävän loogisia. Echelonin aseet toimivat Lipstickillä, mikä käytännössä tarkoittaa joko toisen ilotikun lisäämistä ampumista varten tai F-näppäimen painelua. Valitettavasti toimituksen Lipstick on jossain karkuteillä, joten toimintaa ei saatu testattua.
Echelon yhdistää futuristisen lentosimulaattorin seikkailupeliin ja yhtä seikkaa lukuunottamatta hyvin tuloksin. Tämä seikkahan on tietysti kuusnelonen. Raskas levyltälatailu (kasettiversio...hrrrrf!) ja hidas vektorigrafiikka tappoivat ainakin minun kohdallani alkuinnostuksen, mutta PC:ssä pitäisi Echelonin olla tämän näytteen perusteella kovaa kamaa. Heikon menestyksen takia ei Echelonia tulla kuitenkaan ST-Amigassa näkemään.
1989 SyksyEchelon is the code name for a top-secret military base located on Isis, the tenth planet of our solar system. Echelon is run by the International Space Federation, whose mission in life is to put a stop to space piracy. As luck would have it, the Federation knows that the pirates' main base is on Isis, so there's nothing for it but to fire up the C-104 Tomahawk's engines and go pirate hunting.
The ultimate aim, of course, is to find the space crooks' hidden base. You find it by flitting about over the surface of Isis, searching for objects and clues from which the coordinates of the pirates' vile hideout gradually become clear.
The C-104 Tomahawk is a technophile's dream come true. The ship is equipped with a computer, a remote-controlled droid, a teleporter and four different weapon systems to boot. You can zoom the landscape freely and the views open up in every direction. Naturally the keyboard gets heavy use, so clearly you won't get much Echelon played without a symbiosis of manual and language skills.
The graphics are fairly simple vector graphics and, this being the C-64, excruciatingly slow. Otherwise the ship's controls are pleasantly logical. Echelon's weapons work with the Lipstick, which in practice means either plugging in a second joystick for the shooting or pressing the F key over and over. Unfortunately our office Lipstick is on the lam somewhere, so we couldn't test how it works.
Echelon combines a futuristic flight simulator with an adventure game, and with good results, save for one thing. That thing, of course, is the C-64. The laborious disk loading (the cassette version...hrrrrf!) and the slow vector graphics killed my initial enthusiasm, in my case at least, but on the PC Echelon ought to be hot stuff, judging by this sample. Due to poor sales, however, Echelon won't be seen on the ST or the Amiga.
