Chicago 30's
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Kontrolloit siis Chicagossa 1930-luvulla Elliott-nimistä poliisia, jonka tehtävänä on toteuttaa kieltolakia, eli tuhota laittomat viinavarastot. Näin siis toteaa ohjekirja. Itseasiassa pelihahmo kipittää pitkin vaakasuoraan scrollaavaa maisemaa ja ammuskelee kaikki vastaantulijat. Uuuuuurgh!
1989 SyksyInitial expectations really weren't high: on the cover a young whippersnapper who looks about 14 is swaying about waving a submachine gun bigger than himself. The back cover does at least mention that the player controls a character called Elliott. That at least raised my expectations, since I thought The Untouchables was a good film. The game wasn't called The Untouchables, though. Could U.S.Gold be saving the licence for some other game?
Anyway, my hand groped the disk out of the case and slapped it into the drive. At that very moment my eye found something in the case that was eye-ouch!-catching. Whatwhat? The name of the programming team made me think twice about whether it was even worth loading the game. The gang responsible was the Spanish TopoSoft, whose previous game MadMixGame was an average Pacman clone.
The first attempt left an even more horrible aftertaste in my mouth than I'd feared: I pressed the fire button and the game froze! There's the wonders of coding for you. Second time round we did at least get going. So, you control a policeman called Elliott in 1930s Chicago, whose task is to enforce Prohibition, i.e. destroy the illegal booze stashes. So says the manual, anyway. In actual fact the character scurries along a horizontally scrolling landscape and shoots everyone who comes his way. Uuuuuurgh!
The instructions give no info beyond a lame background story and a list of keys, in case for some reason you want to play from the keyboard. The graphics are nowhere near the best that can be wrung out of the C-64 - just look at Renegade III, say. The music is so bland that you don't even notice it. The only nice trick in the game is that the player's lives are shown as the number of spectators in a theatre (the game is, you see, like a film that people are watching), and every time the player dies, one spectator leaves. It makes you wonder how even those four spectators wandered into the theatre in the first place. To use an old joke, one can finally note that a fitting new name for TopoSoft would be the Untalented.
