1989 SyksyBuffalo Billin villin lännen show veti kansaa kuin pipoa 1880-luvulla. Tynesoft on ottanut härkää sarvista ja tehnyt aiheesta jonkinasteisen urheilupelin. Lajeina on veitsen heitto, tarkkuusammunta, villin hevosen selässä pysyminen, postivaunujen pelastaminen, vasikan lassoaminen ja härkäpaini.
Koko hoito on hoidettu varsin tyylikkäästi. Näyttävällä grafiikalla säestäen ohjelma pyytää pelaajien lukumäärää ja nimiä. Pelaajia voi olla yhdestä neljään ja koko ajan taustalla soi taidokkaasti tehty wild west -musiikki. Musiikin eteen on nähty paljon vaivaa: jokaisessa lajissa on oma tunnusmusiikkinsa.
Alkuvalikossa voidaan valita mikä tahansa laji, tai vaikka kaikki. Lajit ladataan multiloadina, mutta onneksi kaikkia lajeja voi pelata kuinka monta kertaa tahansa.
Veitsen heitto vaatii pelaajalta tarkkuutta, hyviä refleksejä ja hitusen onnea. Maalina toimii ympyrän muotoiseen pyörivään puukehikkoon sidottu kaunis intiaanityttö. Mitä lähemmäksi tyttöä pelaaja veitsensä heittää, sitä enemmän pisteitä karttuu. Jos veitsi osuu tyttöön, ruutu värjäytyy lentävästä verestä punaiseksi.
Tarkkuusammunnassa pelaajan tulee ampua aavikolta nousevia pahvikylttejä mahdollisimman nopeasti. Kylteissä on roistojen, naisten ja sheriffien kuvia, naisten ja sheriffien ampuminen tietää huutia.
Villin hevosen selässä pysyminen ei ole niitä helpoimpia tehtäviä. Ruudun alareunassa on nuolet kaikkiin ilmansuuntiin. Pelaajan tehtävä on vääntää tikkua vastakkaiseen suuntaan kuin lineaarisesti kasvava nuoli näyttää. Oikealla taktiikalla äijä sattaa pysyä hevosen selässä jopa viisi sekuntia...
Postivaunujen pelastamisessa ranne joutuu Decathlonin tapaan kovalle koetukselle. Ideana on ratsastaa inkkarien ryöstämien postivaunujen perässä vemputtamalla tikkua olan takaa oikealta vasemmalle ja sitten tapella nyrkkitappelua punanahkojen kanssa.
Vasikan lassoaminen ja härkäpaini ovat luonteeltaan kutakuinkin samanlaisia lajeja. Sivusuunnassa skrollaavalla ruudulla pelaaja yrittää saada kiinni elikon ja kukistaa sen maahan mahdollisimman nopeasti.
Kaikenkaikkiaan Rodeo Games on ihan hauskaa puuhaa iltojen iloksi. Peli on hyvin toteutettu ja kaikinpuolin kiva pelata: varteenotettava vaihtoehto urheilupeliä ostettaessa.
1989 SyksyBuffalo Bill's Wild West show drew crowds like crazy in the 1880s. Tynesoft has taken the bull by the horns and made a sports game of sorts out of the subject. The events are knife throwing, sharpshooting, staying on a wild horse, rescuing the stagecoach, calf roping and steer wrestling.
The whole affair has been handled with real style. Accompanied by eye-catching graphics, the program asks for the number of players and their names. There can be from one to four players, and all the while skilfully made Wild West music plays in the background. A lot of trouble has gone into the music: each event has its own theme tune.
In the opening menu you can pick any event, or even all of them. The events are loaded as a multiload, but fortunately you can play every event as many times as you like.
Knife throwing demands accuracy, good reflexes and a smidgen of luck from the player. The target is a beautiful Indian girl tied to a round, spinning wooden frame. The closer to the girl you throw your knife, the more points you rack up. If the knife hits the girl, the screen turns red with flying blood.
In sharpshooting the player has to shoot cardboard signs popping up from the desert as quickly as possible. The signs carry pictures of outlaws, women and sheriffs; shooting the women and sheriffs earns you a telling-off.
Staying on a wild horse isn't one of the easiest tasks. At the bottom of the screen there are arrows pointing in every direction of the compass. The player's job is to wrench the stick in the opposite direction to the one shown by the linearly growing arrow. With the right tactics the guy might stay on the horse's back for as long as five seconds...
In the stagecoach rescue your wrist is put through a tough test, Decathlon-style. The idea is to ride after the stagecoach robbed by the Injuns by waggling the stick from right to left for all you're worth, and then have a fistfight with the redskins.
Calf roping and steer wrestling are pretty much the same kind of event. On a sideways-scrolling screen, the player tries to catch the critter and wrestle it to the ground as quickly as possible.
All in all, Rodeo Games is quite a fun way to brighten up your evenings. The game is well made and nice to play in every way: a serious option when buying a sports game.
