Western Games
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988Pelin nimi lupaa paljon: ainakin paljon ammuskelua. Pelissä saakin ammuskella kaljatuoppeja viattomien poikien kädestä, syljeksiä puremiasi sikarin paloja sylkykuppiin, lypsää lehmää ja vääntää kättä kilpaa joko kaveriasi vastaan tai sitten tietokoneen valitsemaa heppua vastaan.
Peli on huumorilla toteutettu. Sen huomaa baarissa olevasta porukasta, joka on aitoa lännen kansaa, koko ajan pilke silmäkulmassa ja konnuudet mielessä. Pelin musiikillinen puoli ei nyt kovin merkittävä ole, tosin taustalle on digitoitu pätkä baarin melua, joka kyllä antaa jonkinlaisen säväyksen. Samoin ammuskelun ääni on aidontuntuista.
Grafiikaltaan peli on aika hyvä, värejä on käytetty kivasti, tosin tarkkuustila on alin mahdollinen. Pelissä on käytetty paljon animaation tapaisia kohtauksia, yhdessä ruudussa on yli kaksikymmentä liikkuvaa kohtaa, paljonkohan spritejä?
Kenelle sitten Western-Games? Peliä voi suositella kaikille, jotka pitävät villin lännen touhuista ja eriskummallisista urheilumuodoista. Idea pelissä on hyvä, mutta toteutuksesta voidaan olla montaa mieltä. Useimmat lajeista kestävät liian pitkään, tai ovat muuten vain puuduttavia. Mutta John Waynen muistoa ei voi pilata yhdellä keskitason pelillä.
1988The game's name promises a lot: a lot of shooting, at any rate. And sure enough, in the game you get to shoot beer mugs out of the hands of innocent boys, spit the bits of cigar you've bitten off into a spittoon, milk a cow and arm-wrestle, competing either against your mate or against some bloke picked by the computer.
The game has been made with a sense of humour. You can tell from the crowd in the saloon, who are genuine Western folk, with a twinkle in their eye the whole time and villainy on their minds. The musical side of the game isn't really anything to write home about, though a snippet of saloon noise has been digitised into the background, and that does give it a certain frisson. The gunfire sounds authentic too.
Graphically the game is pretty good, the colours have been used nicely, though the resolution is the lowest possible. The game uses lots of animation-like scenes; one screen has over twenty moving bits, I wonder how many sprites that is?
So who is Western-Games for, then? The game can be recommended to anyone who enjoys Wild West goings-on and bizarre forms of sport. The idea of the game is good, but opinions may differ on how it has been carried out. Most of the events go on for too long, or are otherwise just mind-numbing. But the memory of John Wayne can't be ruined by one middling game.
