Ringside

1989 SyksyKaikenkarvaisten tympeiden katutappelupelien jälkeen on piristävää vetää kaveria turpaan jalon urheilun merkeissä. On aika ottaa Tysonit eli taistella tiensä nyrkkeilyn maailmanmestariksi.

Realistinen linja jatkuu ottelijoiden animaatiossa, mitä on ilo katsella.

1989 SyksyAfter dreary street-fighting games of every stripe, it's refreshing to punch a bloke in the face in the name of the noble sport. Time to take on the Tysons, in other words to fight your way to becoming boxing's world champion.

The gladiators of the squared circle have been simulated in game after game, but Ringside makes a more convincing first impression than usual thanks to its versatility. The power of the different punches can be set separately for each hand, and a bout can be set to last 3-15 rounds, each 1-3 minutes long. Before a fight you can go down to the gym to spar and build up your self-confidence. When you beat a boxer ranked higher than yourself, you are given extra power points to share out between your punches and your defence. So the best chance of toppling the champion comes once you've first battled your way up to number two in the rankings and your blows are starting to carry some hefty oomph.

The realistic line carries on into the fighters' animation, which is a joy to watch. Nice touches include knockouts being shown in slow motion and the hero slumped in his corner between rounds, whom you can revive by flapping a towel. The start of each round is announced by a winsome young maiden with serious shortcomings in both her clothing and her arithmetic - the cheeky thing claims that 20 comes after 9!

In theory it's all well in hand, but let's slap an ice pack on that eye and take a closer look. First of all, you can beat the bottom-feeders of the rankings just by holding the joystick in the right-straight position while watching television at the same time. Even conquering the title usually works out after a couple of attempts (that is, if you first have the patience to club your way through the other challengers). You can of course make the game harder, but the real problem is that the player feels like half a mere spectator. For that reason I recommend a second joystick-wrangler as an optional extra for the game.

It niggled me a little that the winner isn't announced by a raised hand but with bare text, especially since every other time the computer can't even be bothered to do that much.

The scoring has been botched too. Along the top edge of the screen are boxes in which pictures of gloves appear every few hits. In a close fight they fill up within a couple of rounds, and after that you have no idea how things stand.

It's a shame that seemingly trivial flaws manage to flatten an otherwise good package, but in any case Ringside offers plenty of fun for two players.
