Alternate Reality - The City
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1989 SyksyMikä oli ennen Alternate Reality - The Dungeonia? The City ja sen huomaa. Vaikka The City onkin lähes samanlainen kuin The Dungeon, on se useimmissa suhteissa paljon heikompi.
Pahinta on kääntyminen - tuskaa.
Moniin rpg-peleihin olen törmännyt, mutta AR - The City on jo omaa luokkaansa.
1989 SyksyWhat came before Alternate Reality - The Dungeon? The City, and it shows. Although The City is almost identical to The Dungeon, it is much weaker in most respects. The basic idea is the same, a role-playing game in a '3D shell', but the execution dates from much further back.
The plot of the thing goes like this: a flying saucer abducts you, and when you wake up you have no idea where you are. There's no actual plot in AR: City; it's a question of staying alive.
On opening the box, an RPG fanatic may suspect for a moment that they've been sold a short package, since role-playing games usually come with hefty wads of orc lists, spells and suchlike. The City couldn't care less: one manual of a few pages and a small slip of extra instructions. The player has to find out most of everything on their own.
It would be best to keep quiet about the execution, but... The so-called 3D routine is rather mushy and stiff, and moving around isn't exactly nimble. Worst of all is turning - agony. The graphics are awful anyway, but what can you do.
The disk handling won't have you singing for joy either. Every single battle and location is loaded separately, which means you get to swap disks (ahh). And after the loading you get to peruse menus whose makers didn't give clarity much thought.
I've run into many RPGs, but AR - The City is in a class of its own. Maybe once upon a time this was magnificent, but now... time has taken its toll.
