1989 KevätTurbo Trax on paras näkemäni kilpa-autoilupeli. Siinä kirkastuu syvällinen vaan niin harvinainen oivallus: "Simuloidaan sellaista, mihin mikron resurssit riittävät!" Autoradalla ajamisen simulointi on paljon helpompaa kuin oikean ohjauspyörän takana istumisen mielikuvan synnyttäminen. Ian Murray-Watson ja Martin Kenwright ovat tehneet lähes täydellisen ajosimulaattorin, joka on parempi kuin esikuvana olleet koottavat sähköautoradat.
Kilparata kootaan ihka oikeannäköisistä palikoista, joissa juoksevat sähkökiskot keskellä. Näistä sähkökipunat leiskuvat, kun autot eivät tasaisesti kulje. Traxin mukana tulee viisi valmista rataa ja lisää voi rakennella itse kukin kykyjensä mukaan. Pelivaihtoehtoja on kolme: aika-ajo, kilpa-ajo mikron kanssa ja ottelu toisen pelaajan kanssa. Kahden pelaajan ajoissa kuvaruutu puolitetaan vaakasuunnassa, mikron kanssa hösätessä voi käyttää koko näyttöä oman radan esittämiseen.
Ajaminen on todellinen nautinto. Ajokki käyttäytyy juuri niin kuin sähköauton bittitodellisuuden tuleekin. Autoa ei tarvitse hakea pitkin nurkkia ulosajon yhteydessä, napinpainallus riittää kääntämään auton oikein päin radalle. Joystickin ominaisuuksilla on tavallista enemmän vaikutusta ajosuoritukseen, jonka vaikeusastetta voi säädellä mielin määrin.
Auton ja renkaiden kunnon kuin myös menoveden riittävyyttä on helppo seurata ja varautua ajoissa varikkokäyntiin. Tämä ja märällä radalla ajaminen ovat eräitä ominaisuuksia, joita esikuvista ei löydy. Turbo Trax on niin hyvä peli, että vielä ei osaa kaivata edes parempaa grafiikkaa tai tuhdimpia äänitehosteita. Vuoden parhaan autopelin paikalta Turbo Traxin pystyy varmimmin syrjäyttämään vielä viimeistellympi autoratasimulaatio.
1989 KevätTurbo Trax is the best racing game I have seen. It crystallises a profound yet oh-so-rare insight: "Let's simulate something the micro actually has the resources for!" Simulating driving on a toy racetrack is much easier than creating the illusion of sitting behind a real steering wheel. Ian Murray-Watson and Martin Kenwright have made a near-perfect driving simulator that is better than the build-it-yourself electric slot-car sets it was modelled on.
The track is assembled from honest-to-goodness real-looking pieces with electric rails running down the middle. Sparks flash from these when the cars aren't running smoothly. Trax comes with five ready-made tracks, and everyone can build more to the best of their abilities. There are three game options: time trial, a race against the micro and a head-to-head against another player. In two-player races the screen is split horizontally; when tussling with the micro you can use the whole screen to show your own track.
Driving is a real pleasure. Your motor behaves exactly the way an electric car's bit-reality ought to. You don't have to go fetching the car from the corners of the room when you fly off the track; a press of the button is enough to set the car back on the track the right way round. The properties of your joystick have more effect than usual on your driving, the difficulty of which can be adjusted to your heart's content.
It's easy to keep an eye on the condition of the car and the tyres, as well as on whether the go-juice will last, and to prepare for a pit stop in good time. This and driving on a wet track are among the features you won't find in the sets it's modelled on. Turbo Trax is such a good game that you don't even find yourself wishing for better graphics or beefier sound effects yet. The thing most sure to knock Turbo Trax off its spot as the best car game of the year is an even more polished racetrack simulation.
