Total Eclipse

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Total Eclipse

1989 KevätIncentiven kehutut Freescape-tekniikkaa hyväkseen käyttävät pelit ovat menneet näemmä hyvin kaupaksi, koska uusia yritelmiä tulee kaupan jatkuvasti ja tällä kertaa jopa uusitulla Freescapella.

Total Eclipse on 1930-luvun Egyptiin sijoittuva toimintaseikkailu.

Peli on varsinainen kartturin unelma, sillä pyramidin kolmiulotteinen sisus on täynnä toinen toistaan epämääräisempiä kammioita sarkofageineen, portaineen, vesialtaineen, silmineen, katoavine ovineen ja muine pikku ylläreineen. Vain huolellisella kirjanpidolla pärjää, sillä peliin onnistuu eksymään todella helposti ilman toivoakaan ulospääsystä.

Pelkän huoneesta toiseen hiippailemisen lisäksi pelaajan on pidettävä huolta pelihahmon pulssista (sydänkohtaus uhkaa), vesipullosta (janoon kuoleminen uhkaa), ajan kulumisesta (meteorisateeseen kuoleminen uhkaa) ja lompakosta (pitäisi kuulemma vielä rikastuakin). Joissakin huoneissa kulkee kapeita ramppeja, joiden kautta joutuu tasapainottelemaan, siinä missä joitakin kohteita on paras ampua ensin ja kysellä vasta sitten.

Hyvästä ideasta huolimatta Total Eclipse on varsin yks'totinen peli. Kahdeksanbittisellä koneella toteutettu kolmiulotteinen grafiikka on turhauttavan hidasta, ja ainakin allekirjoittanut kyllästyy Freescape-grafiikkaan nopeasti. Kartoittamisesta pitävät toimintapelien ystävät voivat pitää tästäkin. Minä en ihmeemmin.

1989 KevätIncentive's much-praised games making use of the Freescape technique have evidently sold well, since new efforts keep hitting the shops, and this time even with an overhauled Freescape.

Total Eclipse is an action adventure set in 1930s Egypt. Millennia ago the high priest of the sun god Ra laid down a curse under which any object that stops the sun's rays reaching Ra's shrine will be blown to pieces. Everything has gone along quite nicely since then, apart from a couple of clouds, birds and aeroplanes having lost themselves in the Egyptian sky.

On 26 October 1930, however, a solar eclipse is due over the area, and the Moon exploding would have quite some side effects, on Earth as it is in heaven. The player is an Egyptologist who believes in the power of the curse, and whose task is to find the temple at the top of the great pyramid and destroy it before the eclipse is total.

The game is a real mapper's dream, since the three-dimensional interior of the pyramid is full of chambers, each more nondescript than the last, complete with their sarcophagi, stairs, water basins, eyes, vanishing doors and other little surprises. Only careful bookkeeping will see you through, because it's really easy to get lost in the game without the faintest hope of finding a way out.

Besides simply sneaking from one room to the next, the player has to keep an eye on the character's pulse (a heart attack looms), water bottle (death by thirst looms), the passing of time (death by meteor shower looms) and wallet (apparently you're supposed to get rich as well). Some rooms have narrow ramps running through them that you have to balance your way across, while some targets are best shot first, with questions asked only afterwards.

Despite the good idea, Total Eclipse is a pretty monotonous game. Three-dimensional graphics done on an eight-bit machine are frustratingly slow, and the undersigned at least gets bored of Freescape graphics fast. Action game fans who like mapping may well like this one too. Me, not particularly.
