Castle Master

1990 SyksyJo kolme Freescape-peliä on nähnyt päivänvalon, joten luulisi kyseisen kolmiulotteisen systeemin olevan aikansa elänyt. Vielä mitä, Incentive läimäyttää pöytään Super Freescapen, jolla bittimaisemiin saadaan entistä enemmän uskottavuutta. Total Eclipsessä tutkittiin pyramidin sisuskaluja, Castle Masterissa on vuorossa keskiaikainen linna, jonne sekopäinen Magister-velho on vanginnut puolikkaan pelaajan sielusta.

Pelialue on todellakin Linna eikä pelkästään sarja sokkeloisia käytäviä.

Linnaan on mahdutettu tavattomasti toimivia yksityiskohtia, joista suurimman osan tehtävänä on pelkästään hauskuuttaa pelaajaa. Tärkeämpää on tietysti ongelmien ratkominen.

Pelin heikoin lenkki on vajaatehoinen äänipuoli.

1990 SyksyThree Freescape games have already seen the light of day, so you'd think the three-dimensional system in question had had its day. Not a bit of it: Incentive slaps Super Freescape down on the table, bringing more credibility than ever to the pixel landscapes. In Total Eclipse you explored the innards of a pyramid; in Castle Master it's the turn of a medieval castle, where the crackpot wizard Magister has imprisoned half of the player's soul.

The playing area really is a Castle and not just a series of mazy corridors. From the very first seconds, the game's virtual reality takes hold so strongly that everything irrelevant outside the monitor's frame ceases to exist. First you admire the handsome facade, then you march in across the drawbridge, pop into the courtyard to take a look at the stables and the church, clamber up spiral staircases, wander about the underground catacombs, and so on. The sightseeing tour also reveals that the previous owner didn't have much respect for historic architecture. The castle even has a swimming pool and a modern bathroom with gents' and ladies' toilets and a washbasin with gold-plated taps.

An enormous number of working details have been squeezed into the castle, most of which are there purely to amuse the player. For example, you can flush the toilet, and you can make the smith's forge glow by working the bellows. More important, of course, is solving the problems. Most of them are the usual business of hunting for keys and stoning spirits, but there's room for some little logic nuts to crack as well: pressing buttons, trying out Herculean strength, giving some obstacle a shove in the right spot, and that sort of thing. This Dungeon Master-style straightforwardness is a good trait in that the player's curiosity and perseverance are more decisive virtues than brains.

Despite the intricacy of the surroundings, the graphics update rate has been pumped up to just the level where most of the time you don't pay it any attention at all. More bothersome are the rather crude controls, made especially uncomfortable by the mouse's tremendous sensitivity and the uncomfortable design of the icon used for moving. Even this cause for grumbling disappears once you get hold of magic that lets you zip straight from one doorway to another.

The game's weakest link is its underpowered sound. The music doesn't thrill enough and the effects are pretty rough too. It should also be mentioned that the teasing clues hung on the castle walls and the hilarious poem in the manual were written by Mel Croucher, the Grand Old Man of the games industry.

It takes a good long while before you've combed the castle's labyrinths forwards and backwards. Even after that you can go for the maximum score and try playing as a character of the opposite sex. To be honest, I was already beginning to doubt Freescape's vitality, but Castle Master flushed my prejudices down the sewers of the deepest catacombs. Nosing around a strange interior hasn't been this much fun since Dungeon Master, and what's more, you get a castle of your very own thrown in for a ridiculously low price.
