Technocop

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Technocop

Ison grafiikan miinuspuoli on lyhyt ensivaroitus roistoista eikä hitaasti ampuva lakimies pysty kompensoimaan.

Amiga-piirin etsivä Nirvi toteaa näin: "Ajo-osuus on siististi toteutettu, muttei sen enempää kiehdo. Roiston kiinniottaminen sen sijaan huvitti suuresti, juuri epäreinohenkisestä otteestaan johtuen. Amiga-version grafiikka ja animaatio on varsin hyvää, ja digitoidut efektit viihdyttävät. Technocopin reipas verinen väkivalta kohottaa pelin standardipelin yläpuolelle."

Mutta miten kuusnelosessa. Etsivä Olkkonen sanoo painokkaasti: "Pelin toteutus on ällistyttävä: voiko vuonna 1988 enää edes ajatella näin surkean yritelmän tekemistä?

1989 KevätTechnocop - partly a driving game, partly a shoot-'em-up, wholly the work of the American Grey Matter.

The future doesn't look nice. Technology steamrolls the little man, the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and crime runs rampant in the streets so that the little man gets steamrolled a second time too. No wonder even the police are handed sweet sports cars, so that someone might actually go into this thankless profession. This is the story of Technocop, a policeman whose kit includes a computer wristwatch, a crime radar, a rifle and a Magnum 88. And of course the world's best and fastest car.

The first section of the game deals with Technocop cruising about in his fancy car in a typical Roadblasters clone. But when the crime radar starts beeping, the cruising ends and the work begins.

When the cop leaves his car to go after the criminal, antisocial elements start going for him with knives and baseball bats. The cop then calmly shoots them to pieces as blood and guts splatter. There are bystanders around too, such as cheerful little boys, who you're not supposed to shoot, but some of whom do go down "by accident". Nets can be used if the quarry has to be caught alive. In the multi-screen buildings you can get about by lift, and the cop can even pull off a fancy somersault. The downside of the big graphics is the short advance warning of the villains, and the slow-shooting lawman can't make up for it.

Detective Nirvi of the Amiga precinct states as follows: "The driving section is neatly done, but doesn't fascinate beyond that. Catching the villain, on the other hand, amused me greatly, precisely because of its unsporting approach. The Amiga version's graphics and animation are rather good, and the digitised effects entertain. Technocop's hearty, bloody violence lifts the game above the standard game."

But how about on the C-64? Detective Olkkonen says emphatically: "The execution of the game is astounding: can anyone in 1988 even think of making such a pathetic effort any more? Gremlin seems to have got stuck marking time: five years ago the game would surely have been a hit, but I for one demand some sort of standard from a product I've bought at a high price. The graphics are even partly tolerable, but the effects, music and playability are absolutely at zero. Especially in the cassette version, which keeps loading something all the time and asks the user to wind the tape back and forth. Yuck."

Opinions of the police are many, and of it as a game too. It's the version that decides.
