Police Cadet

1987Miltä tuntuisi viettää neljä lukukautta New Yorkin poliisikoulussa?

Puistoon eksyneitä vanhuksia ja koirankusettajia on pimeässä hankala erottaa gangstereista, joten moni harmiton kanssaeläjä siirtyy tuonpuoleiseen innokkaan kokelaan turvatessa heidän elämäänsä.

Pelin grafiikka on varsin siedettävää pelin luonteeseen nähden.

1987How would you like to spend four terms at the New York police academy? Now you have the chance, in the form of a computer game. The cadet's abilities are put to the test on the crime-infested streets of the Bronx, where the usual methods of the village bobby won't get you very far.

The first term is spent in a subway station teeming with gun-waving hooligans. Sometimes they blast peaceful commuters dead for no sensible reason whatsoever. Your job is to serve hot lead to every crook and keep the census figures for law-abiding citizens at a tolerable level. In practice this means the player moves the cursor around and jerks the fire button to bump off the antisocial individuals in the crowd swarming the station who are just begging to be butchered.

The screen brings a shooting range to mind, and every now and then the pressures of being a police cadet erupt in reckless bursts of automatic fire that mow down decent citizens by the heap. The police chief doesn't scold you very harshly, even though the population of the Bronx does thin out in the crossfire of eager cadets. The cursor, which stands in for the sights of the cadet's gun, easily slides off the edge of the screen to the opposite side, and moving the sights quickly takes a fair amount of concentration.

In the second part of the game you blast away at gunmen holed up in a brick tenement as they appear at the windows, and the shooting-range atmosphere just keeps getting stronger. In the third term the cadet moves on to more demanding work, patrolling a dark park. The beam of a searchlight lights up one small round patch of the night-time landscape at a time, and it is teeming with shady characters like a back alley full of cats. In the dark it is hard to tell the old folk who have strayed into the park and the people out taking their dogs for a pee from the gangsters, so many a harmless fellow creature passes on to the other side while the eager cadet is safeguarding their lives.

Once the cadet has learned the important skill of slaughter over the first three terms, they can be entrusted in the final term with arresting shoplifters. Besides being non-violent, this part of the game is the most interesting of all and the one that does most to sharpen your powers of observation. You watch a couple of rows of shelves in an ordinary self-service shop whose customers are all one and the same grey mass. The temptingly displayed goods always lead some customer into temptation, and a gap appears on the shelf. Your job as a police cadet is to pick out, from among the customers wandering back and forth, the light-fingered one whose sleeve the item got stuck to.

The graphics are quite tolerable considering the nature of the game. Certain player personalities will surely get some fun out of being a police cadet for a while, but there is no other way to put it: it's sick!
